View Full Version : Whats in a Name?!

KewlAzMe
14th Jun 2003, 04:17 PM
Ever wonder why some people pick a certain screen name for themselves? Whats the meaning of some of these names, and where do they come up with them?

This post is for just that, its probably been done before but i dont remember it so Im starting my own.

Tell us why you chose your screen name, and how you got the idea to use it.

KewlAzMe - Back when i first got AOL, my screen name was the default name they made for me. Like MH1400222. So i wanted a screen name that was better and standout-ish. So I think my first SN was PowrCycle. Which was ok but got old. Then i was hooked on the word Kool, spelling it with a 'K'. So I wanted to have a name with Kool in it. So I was trying KoolLikeMe, KoolIam, KoolIAm, Koolest, koolness, KoolAsMe...KoolAzMe.. YES thats it, KOOLAZME and it matches my arrogance! Its perfect!... but alas.. AOL would not allow a screen name with the letters A, O, and L be next to eachother in any order.. so koOLAzme has a problem. So I changed it to KewlAzMe. That name was available and Ive used it on every forum, email, & login page ever since!

Nachimir
14th Jun 2003, 04:50 PM
I picked Nachimir intuitively (exactly the kind of thing I don't do very often). I'd just stopped being religious, had been feeling a certain lack of identity, then after a few realisations felt calm, and content. I had an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity.

I hadn't been on the net long, and when I came to pick a name I realised I didn't know any I wanted. So I decided to go with intuition. I decided it would be a Russian name, so googled for an appropriate dictionary. Then thought "It begins with N". Looked at the size of the page, then started scrolling up and down really fast without trying to read the names or their meanings. "Nachimir" was the first one that stuck out at me, as it went past a bit of me screamed "That's it!". I scrolled back up and found it meant "Start of peace."

The symbols happened around the same time, after I accidentally entered a trance and happened to have a piece of paper and a pen in front of me. When I came to, it was covered in random drawings with those symbols in the middle, which seemed as potent and important to me as the name.

- it's the ironic reference to a christmas carol when I'm very dead set against religion - hence the pSyChO lettering, and the main reference is 'SiLeNt...with the 'k' missing from 'kNiGhT....meaning for Thievery; a silent knight, or the sound after a night of pillaging in a town sound asleep...
Also, I used to have 'SiLeNt_NiGhT - ex hammerite', indicating a 'falling out' with a secret society then turning thief. Thought I'd make a whole character out of it.

Tankazz
14th Jun 2003, 05:33 PM
My old net-name was just my initials, LWM, which suited me fine. Until I grew a brain. Then I watched the movie, The Matrix (8)), and there was a race to chose names from the movie on the server. I wound up with Tank. This suited me because I am "large" (and by large, I mean fat ) and rather powerful. Then a few rejects started calling me Tank-ass. And since Im not one to care too much about being made fun of, I took it, threw out the s's and tacked on some 1337 z's and now I have my name. :thumb:

Back when I started playing Half-Life multiplayer mods, I chose the name Bulletcatcher. The idea was that it would reflect my current skills, and if I ever got better, I could say it means I'm so quick I catch bullets with my bare hands. When I started playing Thievery (the only UT mod I play), I decided I needed a name which fits in better with the medieval/fantasy setting of the game, so...

Well... as I like flying a lot (getting my license next summer if everything goes alright), I decided my name should somehow be related to it. Therefore Qantas was no problem to figure out and it also reflects my Australian origin.

The prefix caused me some problem, though, but one time I happened to be listening to Tom Waits's Black Rider CD, the "Deep from the jungles of Africa"-part kinda caught me... Being an outlander in Finland et all.

Therefore -> DeepQantas

I'd just stopped being religious

Woo! Right on man!
I love it when people convert the other way. I had a philosophy teacher who was an ex-catholic priest who turned into a rampant athiest, psychologist and philosophy teacher. Probably the most interesting dude I've ever encountered.

Anyway- my name (as in MegaDude, not !eduDageM): I worked as a games-tester for Sega for a while, and we played against a lot of Germans in various on-line Dreamcast games, so I chose the cheesiest, crappiest awful German-sounding name I possibly could.

I love Egypt, it's culture, it's history...
So I was making a research on this fabulous country when I found a city named "Luxor". Right after, I began playing diablo 1 and I was searching for a name. I remembered that one quite easily.
To add my little touch in it, I switched the x and r.

So, Lurox. :D

Despite the good "intentions" (in quotations for a reason...) of religion, it's also one of the leading causes of pain and misery on this earth...

More than any other power on earth, religion gives you complete control over not only what a person does but what a person thinks.

Every religion is or has been guilty of brain-washing the masses to their own ends. And they will do so again in the future...

It's something that is neither noble nor honorable...

[EDIT:] Do I REALLY need to tell my story AGAIN?! :P

Hey dude, I'd love to believe in a God, but there's absolutely no evidence whatsoever. None. I've been trying to find one for years, but I've to hear a single convincing argument for his/her/it's existence.
As far as I can tell the only reason to believe is

a) you were indoctrinated at an early age, or

b) you're close to death and you're shit-scared.

Anyway, sorry, this is a name-thread. You could always start another thread if you'd like me to produce a full-on rant.

Pity, you will find wrestling it [the universe and hence this world] from my domination to be a truly impossible task. I wish you the best of luck, but just the same I will reserve cell number 85,672,210 for you, it has a nice view of "Extermination Complex Theta".

But don't worry, I have already put "Operation Kill All Dan Type People" into effect, if you hear a knock on your door, please don't run as my agents have already had several runners, and suffice to say the clean up is messy and time consuming, c'mon be a good sport about it.

I just made up my name... the idea was to make up something that sounded... namish.

It has evolved somewhat, from the days when i played on battle.net as Yexx, then Yexkengzarill in some other games... shortly after it was Yenzarill. I use yenzarill everywhere, in all games and media.

Thwark
14th Jun 2003, 10:47 PM
same story as i always tell:

When Quake 3 first came out, I had a shitter computer (Pentium 233MMX witha Voodoo3 PCI card). It wouldn't play the game. The first time i ever played it was at a friends house. He made me change the player profile to a new name, even though it wasn't online - only against bots - so as to "not sully his good name with bad playing" (i shit you not). So Thwark was the first thing that came to my mind. It's got nothig to do with nothing, it was just the first sound i thought of at that moment, and it stuck.

Before that I was online as "AnarchyDivine" which is the name of a Fates Warning song I rather like. My email is still anarchydivine@hotmail.com, because it's about 5 years old or so. My AIM nick is still AnrchyDvne, for the same reason.

I also sometimes use the nick "ThwarkIsALlama", which started as an alternate nick on IRC, after I saw the movie "the Emperor's New Groove" - Eventually the "llama" part stuck, and that's what I'm known as to some people. even in RL, some people call me "Llama" (Note: I hate being called by my first name).

More recently, on some boards I use the nick "Birdcatcher" or "The_Birdcatcher", which is a reference to a Dose One album "Circle".

I'm a minister's son. In church settings, I've witnessed personally the nastiest, most manipulative, vicious behavior it's ever been my profound misfortune not to have been able to avoid seeing. Not just one church setting, but EVERY church setting I've become acquainted with. It's my belief, based upon observation and personal experience, that the secular organizations attached to spiritual teachings inevitably corrupt those teachings, and foster this kind of behavior. It's a natural consequence of ORGANIZED religion (as opposed to personal religion).

I too agree with LR, (did I just say that? OMG lol) organized religion
seems to be who has the most power and or money. I believe in God though.,
and whenever I'm out in the mountains or wilderness areas is when I feel he is

My name, well when I originaly started playing thievery I used the name slinky,
I was going to use sneaky but alas someone was already using that name.
Heya sneaky! : ) anyway I wanted something that reflected the you see me
now now you don't of being a thief so Ghostly apparition was born.
In other games I was using variations on the name neo from the matrix movie
but it seemed that everyone was also doing that. Myhero became my name when
playing UT or UT2003.

Depends on the type. Any religion that is obsessed with money isn't the right one. For example, catholic. "Give us some money when you kill a person and you can go to heaven, maybe."

Still , CrouchingDork didn't elaborate on his nickname... does it come from Thievery or... Counterstrike ? :joking:

I always used communist nicknames... russian ones sounded better , I used to take Boukharine's name in Quake 3 for exemple. But since Stakhanov was the most unique (underused) I stick with it now , even if he wasn't a communist strictly speaking... questionable ideologies behind him too , but hey , it's MY nickame and it represents my one and only virtual identity.

Greek general, added a G because it sounds better imo.
Also (for you B5 buffs) a Starship.
A robot in the game, Heavy Gear 2.
And I'm told but cant say for myself, a warship in the wars around 1800. (I'm guessing this is why Bab 5 used it, as some reference to the past)

My original name I came up with when I was like 11 or so was darpgmasta, which is The RPG Master, trying to be gangsta. :joking: (and ironically enough,is still my email. :P )Then I went through the FF8 Beastiary in the back of the strategy guide for it.I came across the the monster called Raldo, but I threw a s on the end for good measure.Raldos is the name I usually use to register and such, because Grey Fox is mostly already taken. Now,for Grey Fox.When playing through MGS, I thought the Cyborg Ninja was so cool, from his costume to his voice, and especially his Leet sword. But, I thought "Cyborg Ninja" sounded to generic and kind of corny,so I read his history in the game booklet.I found out his codename before he died was Gray Fox.I thought it sounded pretty cool, although I use the "e" version of Grey,to cut down on the gay jokes.(looks at home skillet. :guard:)That about sums it up.

Curunir
16th Jun 2003, 03:37 AM
Curunir: Tolkien name. Original name of Saruman the White. This was his name while he was in the West (west of Middle-Earth). He, as well as the other "magicians": Gandalf (Olorin), Radagast, Alatar, and Pallando.

Curunir is an elvis word that means "man of skill," or translated in another way, "one of cunning or crafty devices."

I've always been a huge Tolkien fan, and I'm sure it now shows. I picked this name a couple years ago when Jahandar got me into online gaming. I spent weeks and weeks looking for a good name. I found and used several at first, but this one seemed to stick. I guess it had to do with my playstyle, which has usually always been "unconventional" or wierd, yet I consider it cunning or crafty. I think this name also seemed to fit really well in with Thievery because of the trickery and thinking involved. Cunning and craftiness have lots to do with thieving.

My rl name: Shelley = a meadow on a legde, or by a brook.

Assuming 'legde' is ledge, (TG typing too fast again?), you are saying you're a meadow on a ledge, a precipice if you will, a near point of no return. Now for no other reason than to make this amusing (to me anyway), lets drop "on a" and the "L" from "ledge" in the "meadow on a ledge" bit. What does that give us? Yes you are quite right dear reader; a portent of the future, a premonition of a meadow on edge!

Frightening is it not? Yes, many meadows these days are on edge, ready to snap at the drop of a hat. These meadows bear no resemblance to their peaceful ancestors of yore. These new meadows aren't content to sit by a brook, no they have plans of their own. Plans that include stealing all the left shoes in the world, playing loud polka music at all hours and most sinister yet: cloning Celine Dion!

What caused this reversal in the traditional role of a meadow? I don't want to reveal too much, but the brooks [that many meadows sat beside] moved on, leaving the meadows with nothing but the desolation of a ledge! Yes the brooks redirected their course, merging into rivers and in some cases, torrents of white water!

Now reader, I'm sure you're running in circles screaming "The Birds, The Birds, What can we do?!", but thats silly because this discussion is about meadows. So what can we do about meadows? Well, we can pave over them with clean, efficient and thoroughly sanitized concrete.

Burying all natural things under crushed rock and lime will solve all of our problems, this substance "kills" all of nature because lets face it, nature is cruel. Having a fickle conscience? Well don't worry reader, mother nature started this war, diseases and the like were meant to kill us humans, but we survived, and now its our turn, so don't you worry we are perfectly justified. Now you're wondering "How can I help?", for starters you can stomp on any flowers, especially in meadows, if you have any herbicides or good old fashioned paint, dump it all over the meadow. This way, you too can do your part in our battle against meadows, and ultimately; mother nature.

And when the time comes, our glorious government will unleash the special power of radiation on mother nature to warp her into a corrupted image of her former self. Once the commies crumbled, mother nature stepped up to the plate, what she forgot was that Old Glory still has nuclear weapons, so don't be alarmed, along with DDT, we will make our own utopia by stepping on meadows and their ilk. Remember kids, if you see the flash, DUCK AND COVER!

This has been a public service announcement from the Anti-Meadow Department, June 16 1954.

Yeah. I was typing too fast. That and I was a bit tired.

Quit making a federal case out of it.

And I didn't make up the meaning of the name, I just quoted it. Not to mention you missed my brook.

Sigh :erm:

It was all in jest TG, sorry if I didn't make that clear.
I wasn't sure if 'legde' was wrong or not, alternate languages and all that muck.

Appolgy accepted anyway.

Ledge is correct. Legde is a typo.

I have a bit of dyslexia, and I sometimes have trouble with typing and writing.

I blame it on Sesame Street. No joke. They did a study on the children who watched all those flying letter going by, and they found that the incidents of dyslexia were higher in children who watched that show during that era than the ones who didn't.

I watched it during that era. Lucky me.

If you're so timid and unwilling to weather people's opinions (or even a fanciful jest), then why did you post your name in the first place? Logic would dictate that if its such an issue that it would raise your dander, you wouldn't post where you might attract any attention. If you "prefer to remain anonymous" then heres a tip, anonymity is not granted from posting your name or anything deeper. This is your issue, you take responsibility for it, why do you expect a load of strangers to do it for you?

Should I infer that this really isn't an issue for you and you want attention? Or perhaps I should go the route that you can't fathom the consequences of your actions? Or perhaps you are just disillusioned? None of the above. I'm confident that you are a much more complex individual than any of these statements could possibly describe I don't doubt your motivations are much higher than my inferences as well. you have your own inclinations for doing what you do, and I am sure they are greatly justified and not at all akin to what I have stated.

If this is an extreme issue for you TG, I will delete my above posts including this one. Seriously, just say the word. I am not posting this to be mean, I would PM, but if I were you *I* wouldn't want to receive a PM from the worlds biggest jackass either (Sisu, blunt jackass of the extraordinary variety).

The consequences of me being so candid? I don't doubt I will get banned from this forum. If so, [Thwark] please delete my posts from this thread so nobody else reads my negative comments towards TG and tarnishes her standing in any manner.

Good day.

I don't think at any point in his exposition that Sisu said you had an awful name. And as you said, no one else got the treatment you did. Think about that. It may not be an insult, but rather complimentary instead. No one else received the attention he gave you.

It's not. What it is, actually, is a joke in my family. When my mother was pregnant with me, my father used to tease her about naming me "Sedgewick Mertin", because it annoyed the hell out of her, being such a godawful name. We still laugh about "little Sedgy".

When I first entered an online TUT game a looooooong loooooooong time ago I picked the name "Guard_Master" because I was a complete n00b and it sounded funny. Afterwards, when I started to get the hang of being a guard I changed it because it sounded quite arrogant -something I detest- and with the fact that I like Paladins, I changed it to "The_Judge". :)

Radamanthus
22nd Jun 2003, 05:02 PM
I got Radamanthus because he's the son of Zeus, and pretty darn powerful, as i used to be as a guard. Used to.....

Then my mom (who's REALLY anti-guild) started Raging against TcO under my name, and my reputation was completely wiped out.

So I became LordOfTheOnionRings (amazing how many people don't know that). Actually, I was in Burger King, eating none other than my usual (doublewhoppernocheesedrpepperonionringsmakethatex tralarge) and reading the paper. (yeah.. that looked wierd... A kid reading a newspaper wile eating a big-@$$ burger) An article on the movie reviews on Lord Of THe Rings: the Two towers. Suddenly, I drop a half-foot wide onion ring onto the word "Rings" and "two towers". I didn't stop reading, so my mind registerd it as "Lord Of the Onion Rings". The name stuck in my mind until I started playing thievery that night, and wondring what I could change my name to erase the stain of "radamanthus".

Well, that's it.

Thebos
24th Jun 2003, 04:56 PM
Thebos is variant on a nick people instinctively used for me which in turn is a variant of my family name (of Brittish origin I have been told). As it looked like a word, I kept it. Probably reminded me of the Grecian city of Thebes. Any relation is a coincidence. It is the alias I use whenever an alias is needed. When I started playing online games, it was a natural choice (first online game played was Thievery by the way, but to date, I play Thievery and ... er ... well... Thievery). I am not "The Boss" (Can sing pretty like him though) or the boss (too confused) nor is that implied as some might think (not that I blame them-did not think about it when I made it.) Thebos is three syllables: Th - Eb - Os (short e, accent second). I am sure that this information will be useful (let me know if you figure out how). As for meaning, Thebos is I, I am Thebos- He who belongs nowhere yet will venture most anywhere. Read not this post at your discretion.

LikitaRenn
28th Jun 2003, 05:02 PM
LikitaRenn is a character i made up for a short story i was writing, Likita Renn... never finished the story, but i like making up names/ using odd names, and i really wound up having an obsession over this particular name, so it became my alter ego/ self-proclaimed nickname (tho no one irl calls me that...)

i like odd names tho, i name my pets from star wars novels... hehe, iella <cat>, dalla (as in admiral) <rabbit>, callista <rabbit>, bodo (baas) <pet chicken... yes PET chicken... tho she decided she didn't like me after i left her in her cage all winter... >, jaken and jaina (solo) <goldfish... didn't last long as they were carnival goldfish...>... anywho, yeah... lol, i have a thing for unusual names, and someone once told me that they feel sorry for any children i might have... lol

my NAME name is kindra (yes, with an "i", but everyone spells/pronounces it wrong anyways...), which my mom says is "derivitive of kinder, which means 'child of mine'"... *shrugs* my grandma heard someone was having a baby and calling it kendra, but she told mom it was kindra, and when she realized it was wrong, mom had already decided that kindra was better (she said that KENdra sounds like you were trying to have a boy and missed...)

if i was a boy, i'd miles jeffery brooks amoss... miles after my asshole grandfather that decided he was going to get remarried and have nothing to do with his daughter/grandkids, jeffery after my mom's dead brother (word to the not stupid- don't huff random household cleaning products), brooks because she liked it, amoss because she married my dad... don't know where my actual middle name came from (renee with an accent over the last "e")

I was playing Tanarus (A tank game at Sony Online), and was trying to think up a good name. Someone had already taken "terrorists" (The death message was "Stupid was killed by terrorists").

Then this guy we like to call BNT came up behind me and said "You need a weird and cool name, like Salsa Express".

Not only is that a website where you can buy the tastiest salsas, it is now one of my two online names.

Nacho is my Natural Selection name. No particular reason for it. Maybe I pissed some admin off under the name Salsa Express
