View Full Version : any good turn-based RPGs out there?

i recently played through Fallout 2, and for a change, i really enjoyed turn-based combat. im looking for another good turn based RPG, but i can only find KOTOR and some older bioware games.

graphics are not a factor. i just want lots of depth in character creation and preferably a turn-based combat system. im tired of dungeon siege and real time combat like that -- even with recent real times like Sacred, im uninterested.

does anyone know of any really good turn based RPGs out today?

Not really a turn based, but Knights of the Old Republic is an excellent RPG. It's real time D&D rules, but the action pauses when combat starts and you can pause it any time so it doesn't end up being just a giant hack fest.

Any "Ultima" game starting from 3 up to 6.
Keep in mind that these are VERY OLD, but you said graphics were not a requirement.

Just playing Neverwinter Nights and like it. Urmm its not really turn-based, you have to pause yourself, but thats basically the same, eh? ^^ Lots of depth in character creation for sure.

Others i can think of : Jagged Alliance 2 and Final Fantasy 7. If ya got lots of time, get a SNES Emulator and Breath of Fire 2. Best SNES RPG Evar. Chrono Trigger and Ogre Battle are worth it too (though i never finished Ogre Battle. Missed an opportunity to get some special party member, couldnt fix the mistake, got pissed, quitted . :P )

thanks for all the replies, everyone.

Arcanum is turn based? well, even if it's not, i hadnt considered it. its old and probably cheap, too. thanks.

i am almost definitely going to buy KOTOR, however. no one i've talked to has had anything bad to say about it.

Fallout 1, then 2... in that order. Truely great games, very sinister feel to them both.

I think it was made by some of the people from the Fallout team.
I plays partly like it, and like in Fallout Tactics, combat has been evovled so you can choose between Turnbased or Realtime.

Natuk (http://www.proudft.com/natuk.html) I liked really much a few years back, never got the full version but I played through the shareware version. Fantasy team-based turn-based rpg, quite similar as it's older brother Nahlakh, but it's based on Orcs and Trolls. Really sweet spell system, and the nifty graphics aren't too bad either.

Tom Proudfoot started making a sort-of sequel, Pirates of the Western Sea (http://www.proudft.com/pows.html), but it never got finished. The full beta version is downloadable from the page somewhere, but it's buggy as hell. Some people have played it through, but it could get really annoying, because it really is quite not finished.

And Silent Storm is really, really good. There's an expansion coming out soon too, which adds more to it. But I wouldn't call Silent Storm an rpg, it's an turn-based combat game with heavy rpg elements. (character generation and experience etc.) Quite similar to Jagged Alliance.

And if graphics are not a factor, you can never go wrong with Nethack (http://www.nethack.org/) (Or even better, get Slash'EM! (http://www.slashem.org/).)

i read the gamespy review of S2, and it looks like the sort of combat im looking for. an action point system is what i really want. the physics in that game, omg! too bad the story is so nonexistant, or so they say. also, i heard Jagged Alliance 2 wasnt that great, at least in terms of story.

i downloaded the demo for Sacred today. i really dislike the combat, but the graphics, interface, and the entire wandering the world thing i REALLY like. ill need to play it some more to decide.

ill probably just get KOTOR, though im considering S2 now that the combat looks so cool.

There's a good demo out for S2, try it for starters.
Silent Storm's weak points are the lacking of a good story and the somehow "mild" character personalities (compared to Jagged Alliance). But the engine and physics rock! It's a wonderful feeling when you first time accidentally explode a whole building around you or eliminate the enemy by shooting a full burst through a wooden floor, just by listening to their footsteps...

It's not really turn based, but Planescape: Torment is my favorite RPG. AWESOME story, with good gameplay (uses the Baldur's Gate engine).

Darn, I was going to say Jagged Alliance 2...

With so many reccomendations, the information you have must be false.

If you do get it, make sure you buy the Gold version (1.1) if you have Windows XP\2000. The patched original (1.06) only runs on 95\98 unless you don't patch it all the way (and then you have bugs and imbalanced gameplay) The original cannot be patched to 1.1.

Jagged Alliance 2 is the best.. theres so much to the game, each shot you take has so many factors which effect accuracy etc... actually staying behind cover and in camoflauge makes a difference.... plus... who can beat madawg! YEAH! <mad voice> SOMETIMES I PULL ALL MA HAIR OUT! </mad voice>....<sad voice> But it comes back </sadvoice>

I would assume that P:T would have an auto-pause feature?

You could try ANY Tactics game that's ever been made.

You got:

All the Fire Emblem Games
All the Final Fantasy Tactics Games
Ogre Battle (Old Classic)
I think Valkery Profile is a good one too.

Try those :)

From what I remeber yes, but I never used it so I'm not 100% sure. I'd install it and check, but I know I'd get hooked again...

No.

Go here (http://www.kohan.net/kag/) then, it's a pretty good game. Real time strategy, lots of fantasy, plus you can run you own economy, take over towns to help raise it, and you get money faster this way. Warning: May cause addiction.

Okay, no. Knights of the Old Republic and Kohan are old news (Even though Kohan has dragons), Nomic (http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/nomic.htm) is the way to go; you can do ANYTHING!

And it's multiplayer, because multiplayer is more fun.

(But hold on, about this Kohan game, I'm sure it's great and all, and I can ramble off other games that are great, like StrifeShadow (http://www.ethermoon.com/main/index.phtml) or something, but where the heck are you supposed to find it, except clumsy online ordering, and that it may very well be out of stock?)

Everything Master-Builder said, ADOM (http://www.adom.de) instead of Nethack / SlashEm and maybe TheUnRealWorld (http://www.jmp.fi/~smaarane/urw.html) (I would it was freeware and wouldn't crash from time to time on my PC.

If you have a GBA then Golden Sun is very good. Haven't played Golden SUn 2, but my brother has that one and says it is good aswell.

I really should get KOTOR as my brother got JA and it is rather crap and an average game - the shooting side of it is esp crap and buggy.

1. Are you speaking of JA or JA2? I wouldn't doubt that JA is inferior.
2. Are you patched to 1.06? Maybe to 1.1 gold, even?
3. What you say, buggy? Examples.

There's only one Jedi Academy, isn't there? It's the third Jedi Knight game, after Jedi Outcast.

Yes, you're right. The first Jedi Knight game was really good :) I remember it well. All in firstr person. And there was the Mysteries of the Sith add on thing. I only ever played the demo's of them but still :D IIRC the shooting was up to par with the time (it was an old game, think it came out just after/around the time of quake 2 although really i don't know). But anyway, JA seems a bit crap and mediocore.

Shining Force 2 on Mega Drive (Genesis for the Americans here) and Shining Force 3 on Sega Saturn absolutelly ROCK!
They are a bit like Tactics Ogre or Final Fantasy Tactics series but there's not just battles like in those games, there's console rpg style exploration and NPC interraction and such, and they have some cool twists in battle and lots of characters, and other neat stuff, really great games, classics :)
Dont confuse the Force games with other Shining games, the other Shining games like Shining Wisdom or Shining the Holy Arc are in the same universe but not the same style games, they are action RPGs or other similar stuff...still good but not what you are asking for in this thread :)
They are making both a real Shining Force sequel AND a Shining action RPG sequel called Shining Tears for the PS2 now... No real info about the new SF but ST is 2D(!) and looks good for it too :)
Almost makes me wish I owned a console now...almost :)

check out www.spidweb.com if you don't mind ancient graphics, so long as they're accompanied by tons of quests 'n stuff. they've got free demos which are quite large and nifty.

Wow, thats OLD. I still have the original disk sitting here from when I bought it years ago. Good game, a very simple RPG.
