I just got download manager which should increase d/l speed. I also don't pay for the broadband (shared with flatmates, paid by landlord).

Can anyone suggest interesting large stuff that is legal! to d/l? Maybe movies, games, etc but not copyright restricted etc. :)

You can go to www.albinoblacksheep.com, www.seanism.com, www.stileproject.com (this site not safe for work), www.ebaumsworld.com.

--Mostly just crazy internet videos and pictures, watch out for stileproject though its a kinda nasty site.

Red vs Blue and A Great And Majestic Empire are cool. Both can be accessed throuh Machinima.com

www.hxcmp3.com is a Hardcore Punk website full of free music by unsigned artists, and payfor tracks by the signed ones.

www.bangbus.com has some good trailers as does backroomfacials.com

A lot of the stuff thats runs on emulators now is abandonware, stuff like Beneath a Steel Sky, UFO:Enemy Unknown and Lure of the Temptress. The Vallhalla series (Lord Of Infinity, Before the War etc) is rather good.

If you have the original systems, you can own the roms of the chipsets and stuff for them legaly (I have an Amiga 600, thus i have the kickstart rom on my pc). Same goes for the software.

I recomend the games Cannon Fodder, Super Frog, Lotus Turbo Challenge, The Settlers (my mate borrowed it and his dad spent 8 hours solid on it), Baldies, Sensible Soccer and Syndicate.

Enough with the k-18 pages ;)

And now. Abondenwares isn't a legal term. Its a) freeware b)shareware, no abondenware.

Id say, get ufo 1-3 (Ufo enemy unknown (:P), terror from the deep (well... first one is better) and apocalypse for the kicks). Then id say that you get DC (or some other p2p what is really easy to use for small file search) and find some fanbased clips like redvsblue ;)

And if thats not enough, get gunbound and start playing asap.

I don't know if you need cable for this or not, but either way...check it out! Funny as hell flash stuff.

Yeah, Red v Blue is good, too...

www.atomfilms.com has all kinds of movies, flash movies, 3d movies...whatever you want.

www.xombified.com is a pretty cool flash series so far, as well. (site req's actually say "Broadband" so check it out ;) )

Download accelerators are evil.

I remember saying this before (http://forums.blackcatgames.com/showthread.php?t=569&highlight=download)...

You think everything is evil Bill, lighten up, there is life in them thar hills. Download Managers are great applications especially for 56k'rs, and no, I don't care if it sucks up "server slots", I'll be done soon with that download and out of your way in no time.

I didn't care then when I had 56k, and I don't care now.

Stuff to download?

Try emulaters, abandonware, movies containing naked people, game mods, UT maps, whatever! I find it best for getting a hook on a bunch of items and sceduling them all for an overnight download.

Oh yeah, and just in case you didn't already, you MUST GET THESE 2 THINGS!!!

Ad-aware and SpyBot.

If you're gonna go around DLing stuff, you want to be able to remove anything crappy that comes with it.

Yeah I got those but I want to avoid dodgy places. I just meant maybe if there is such a thing as a free movie or (I suppose not though) or I dunno maybe a free game which isn't 10 years old or something..

Wildbill why isn't it the amount of megabites rather than the number of download users that determines how much bandwidth is used?

So then this is a question of ethics?

Is that more metal than punk? I don't know a lot of punk but it seemed a bit more metalish? I dunno.

Err... you could download 100 megs worth of movie, but you can only get it at a certain speed - say 50kb/sec (your personal downstream bandwidth), meaning that it will take you a fair amount of time to download the entire block of data.

Let's say a server has a bandwidth of 100mbit/sec (the total size of their "pipe", so to speak) - your session is allowed 50kb/sec worth of the total, so 100mbit /div 50kb = x amount of sessions at a time. Your download manager gives you the ability to connection multiple sessions, boosting your download rate but lowering the number of available slots (x-3 all up). Crowd it with enough download-managed people and nobody else can connect.

Either way, Conv - if you are on ADSL in Australia at either 256k or 512k, a download manager is pretty much useless to you. I'd recommend just using the inbuilt download tool that comes with Firefox which allows you to pause and resume downloads so long as you don't completely close the program. All the tweak utility bullshit is most likely crap spyware that will do very little for the actual speed of your connection. The best thing you can do for your connection is ensure that you are running it over ethernet (not usb), and that you are using PPPoA (rather than PPPoE), to lower the size of overheads on packets.

I don't think Download manager is spyware from the review at download.com I thihnk it was. Its a 30 day trial so I thought use it as much as possible. I dont know what the broadband is im using tho

Also, see my recommendation about Firefox again and remove the Download manager. You don't need it. :P
