View Full Version : This lag... it pains me.

*primal scream*

This is UNFORGIVABLE!

Argh. Its been all day now that i've been playing Thievery, and despite the fact that it's a very good mod, it is absolutely worthless with the lag spurts i am expiriencing. Sometimes it will show me the disconnection symbol at the right of my hud then it will act as if im in a server all to my own. No objects can be interacted with, noone is around. Then the other times that this putrid state happens is mostly when there is a gaurd attacking me. He will draw forth his Mace, and then i go to laghell. It only comes back together a few seconds later when im staring in third person at my beloved loot and catfall potions.

Sometimes it even registers that a bot killed me as much as 60 seconds ago. Thinking i escaped safely, i settle down in a shadowey corner to drink some potions, and then i get killed for no obvious reason. I cant even see the bot that killed me.

This is rediculous. And don't say its MY machine, Mr. Verant Employee, i'm on a 1mbit connection.

If this happens on every server, it probably is your connection. Have you checked your ingame netstats to get your ping and packet loss? Press F7 while connected and it will show you those. Also try running traceroutes to the servers in question, that can show you if there's a bottleneck up the line a bit, or if it's in your own ISP's neighborhood. It's possible THEY'RE the ones having the problem. I've just switced ISP's for that very reason. Three months of trying to get them to fix 2000-3000 ms lag spikes and double-digit packet loss just didn't cut it.

Also, please tell me that 1 Mbit connection you're on is cable or DSL, and not satellite. If it's satellite, that's your problem right there. Satellite is a high speed connection, but it's also a high latency connection, and that'll kill you dead.

i dont know if i have any power or know how on how to fix this problem though...

Maybe not, but your ISP's tech support does. If you don't get satisfaction at first, make a LOT of noise. You're paying them 2-4 times what you would be paying for dialup, after all, and you're paying that for PERFORMANCE. Performance you're not getting, as it sounds like your situation is worse than many dialup players. If tech support can't/won't help you demand they escalate the call, or ask to speak to their supervisor, or possibly one of their network engineers (most call center emplyees are NOT engineers, after all). Do NOT give up, or let them off the phone until you have some satisfaction, or are assured that you will. Remember, they're in a SERVICE business, they should be giving you the service you're paying for. Investigate other broadband ISP's available to you, and mention what their terms are during your call, particularly if you've ended up speaking to a supervisor.

One word of caution: It's OK to sound angry, and use a raised tone of voice if you're not getting the help you need. It is NOT OK to swear, threaten, or become otherwise verbally abusive. Most customer service centers have rules that their reps are not allowed to hang up on you. Those rules are voided in the case of abusive calls. As long as you don't become abusive, they most likely can't just disconnect you, and will eventually agree to look into the matter just to get you off the phone.

Be sure you follow up.

<--- admitted EQ addict. But thankfully Thievery is helping to break that addiction.

Actually played EQ a fair amount, but nowhere NEAR the amount as a bunch of people I know. I know a guy at work who proudly claimed that he never missed a day of playing in 2+ years

Man, i hate that game and all the people in it.

And as to the addiction, thats all it is. Addiction. You loathe the game. Hate every aspect of it, but you're addicted to something you hate.

Oh, ive never played it.

I didn't give into it.

There are however, better MMORPGs out there, Freelancer is going to be great, and soon imma have a subscription for Shattered Galaxy the world's first ever MMORTS.

I'm serious, that game is great.

EDIT: Oh poo, why doesnt the HIMTIL work?

Its hard to adjust when all your actions can be read by everyone else, but you get NO information as to whats happening from the server. So thus, i can move and act normally in-game just as anyone else would, but i dont SEE anyone. That goes from other Thieves to spiders and of course the infamous Gaur.... *THUNK; DEAD*.

Laughing Rat, well, the problem still ceases to abate. How can i run a traceroute to determine if there is any bottlenecks?

Because well, it runs generally true for most servers that i start out with maybe a minute, a minute and a half with no packetloss, then the incoming packetloss goes through the roof so high it just isnt even playable anymore.

URNF!

*kicks post back up to the top of the list*

By the way, LR, i forgot to mention the fact that im on a router and share my 1.5 mbit connection with 2 other computers. This probably effects my TUT performance.

Im about to reinstall UT and TUT right now... where are my config files in the TUT directory so i can dig them out and save myself the problem of rebinding it all again?

Like i said previously.

Anyway, ive been trying to get some hard-earned help down here in the sewer... *kicks post back up to the top of the list*

Some guy i cannot remember the name to taught me how to do a trace route. Besides it giving me a bunch of gatewap IPs that are kinda laggy and some that plain just dont respond at all, i dont see how this can help me. Help? Anyone? Alright.... fine by me. *takes cyanide pills* :(

Hi LM, the traceroute guy was me. There are a number of resources on the net that may help you identify the problem and work with your ISP/Cable provider to achieve a resolution. However, working with ISP tech support isn't always a pleasant experience. Perhaps you might want to take a look at:
www.dslreports.com
They have a number of resources that can help. In addition to the testing tools (including a few they want you to pay for :( ), you'll also find forums that may offer additional assistance. I believe they even have an FAQ for your MSO here:
www.dslreports.com/faq/charter

Good luck!

Of course I got it. EQ was the only MMORPG that only lasted about a month on my harddrive...

Oh. You're with Charter. That explains it. They're TERRIBLE at maintaining their network. I've been working with a Charter network engineer for three months now, trying to get the problems on my line worked out, and to no avail. I switched to DSL, and am quite happy with that now.

Aaah poo. I think it was once explained to me that DSL bandwidth diminishes with every mile or so you get away from the central ISP office or something... Thats why we never got DSL. Anyway, they only have three resident engineers at the Charter ISP office here in Hickory, and i dont think they feel like helping me... they're kinda cold-toned.

DSL bandwidth DOES decrease with distance from the connection to the backbone. I'm technically on a 768K DSL line, but I get about 640K down and 420K up. But with DSL, it's a dedicated line. You're not sharing bandwidth with everyone else on your subnet.

It has relatively little bearing on gamind, anyway, as latenct and packet loss are your key issues. The only thing that your up/down speeds will affect is your upload or download of a file. 256K is PLENTY fast for even the fastest online games of today.

Or, put another way: Would you rather have faster speeds you don't need and intermittent connection you can't use for gaming, or would you rather have a lower speed still more than ample for gaming, AND a good connection?

LazerMane
14th Jan 2003, 05:58 PM
well, i AM a big warez prince, but i dont think that getting a downgraded connection speed would make much difference...

The problem with it is that my father knows a little bit, but not enough and we certainly DONT have the money to switch services, just for a little old game.

Arggh. Now that i finally know a little bit more about the world (DSL and Cable differences), i go and tell one of my friends that im all happy about the fact that i actually LEARNED something today and that i just helped my team win the last round in Thievery, and he takes it that im trying to act superior to him. Now im all depressed. I think ill go off and do something...... else.... :(

For the record, switching to DSL cost me nothing, in terms of cash. A bit in terms of frustration, but that's another story, and one I'm sure you won't encounter.

Sorry to hear about the problem with your friend, though.
