Thi4f - reboot - legit this time.
Saw this the other day and thought of you guys...

Apparently thief 4 has been in the works for a little while now and there are some basic shots and info out on the web legit from the developer

They are treating this as a reboot.

Other than this juicy bit of info what have you guys been up to - its been years, and while i've poked these forums a few times life has generally kept me away.

Are there any thieveryut servers still around?

industrialism 15th Mar 2013 01:45 AM

Yeah, Thief 4.... *hmm*

Join us were all around, if you wanna play link TuT to steam (we'll see you joining)

Two servers for TUT available afaik, reboot in progress...

-=: -_- :=-

Hey i just read an article in gameinformer about it. Looks awesome. Really glad squarenix is working on it since i've been really impressed with a lot of the games they put out recently.

Man i miss thievery. Might just have to try and download it and fire it up for old times sake one of these days. Wish i had more free time on my hands...

[E.D.G]Chief 16th Mar 2013 11:11 AM

Good to see you again DP, you haven't been on aim in so long I figured your naval career had taken you over completely :)

I think when you do get more free time you may find yourself busy with an unpaid job from indus ;)

BrokenArts 16th Mar 2013 11:52 AM

To all the fellow TuT players coming out of the wood work, ola! Thief 4, hmmm, I don't have high hopes for it, we'll just have to wait and see.

Antero90 16th Mar 2013 01:49 PM

There is more on this tidbit than it looks! Or at least that's my take on it.

So... they first went goth and along the way someone said (lol! nails?). I guess that was the game that was canned early on. Can't say it was a bad call at all when you go on painting black nails! Unfortunatley you get stuff being carried over and the mechanical bow seems to be one of them, because im pretty sure they had to pay for that real life model somehow.

So.... they are targetting us. Why else would they have to come clean after the original story and use the wording "I can assure you we're huge fans of the original games and we've done our homework to create a game that maintains the essence of the original.”. But they are also targeting consoles... I hope they are prepared to also come clean beforehand and say "look guys, we had to redo some stuff to accommodate the control scheme for gamepads and some level design had to be sacrificed for the sake of limited memory".

I will cut some slack to these guys because they saw their error (and nowdays it's quite rare to see someone, let alone a group, admit that they were wrong). But for The Builders sake boys and girls, I hope your homework was not restricted to just watching movies out of context or just playing the training mission!

FixXxeR 16th Mar 2013 01:53 PM

My bro said this to me the other day.

Square Enix made Deus Ex: Human Evolution and its a worthy sequel to first Deus Ex... you're not JC Denton but its still a good game in the Deus Ex universe.

If they're picking up Thief... it might not be truly Garret, but hopefully it'll be a worthy Thief game set in the Thief universe.

BrokenArts 16th Mar 2013 05:33 PM

Hey if its better than Thief 3, I'm game. That is true Fix, lets hope it will exactly that!

Antero90 16th Mar 2013 06:16 PM

I suppose sooner or later the Garret type briefings will go (TDS killed the videos but kept the voice). But please, no romance type stuff. Revenge is fine to a certain degree, but the essence of Thief is stealing with discretion with a KO here or there.

Then again, a reboot could bring back the Burricks and get rid of the undead :P

[E.D.G]Chief 17th Mar 2013 06:01 AM

Sooooo, let's see........
  • Viktoria (now a normal human person) will now play Garretts' wife. Always on the scold against his lack of money for the rent.
  • Garrett will be have a companion, a friendly burrick called Belch.
  • Belch can be used as a distraction to guards (Awww wook at the wittle burrick wurrick - says Benny).
  • Belch can also have his stomach gasses expelled on command (even from a distance by shouting as long as Belch is visible to the player), these can be used (with fire arrows) to create for a mine like explosion - Belch's skin is tough, so takes no damage with this.
  • The hammers and other such factions (including the trickster) have been removed, only the city watch, the baron and the barons superior guard remain (and of course the nobles and plebs of The City).
  • As the story progresses Garrett falls further into the underworld of the city, meeting all sorts of unsavoury characters including the notorious "47".
  • The open world policy of the game allows you to make choices as the game progresses (ala Dishonored). One such decision will show just how much of an anti-hero your Garrett will become in the final end sequence - do you set up a contract with 47 against Viktoria (do you even have the funds!).
  • To make the game more controllable, this time round you will have swing directions. When in melee combat swipe your mouse in the direction the overly large UI arrow shows, to send a killing blow to your already easy to defeat enemy.
  • As the game progresses, depending on how evil your Garrett character becomes, some guards may run in fear the moment they spot you hurtling out of the shadows at them, sword in hand, screaming your chosen (in the main menu options) warcry.
  • As with Thief: Deadly Shadows, you will be able to visit fences to sell your loot, these can then be used to purchase food (to keep your health up) and goth makeup (for that pure thief look we know so well).
  • There will be more domestic creatures, cats, dogs, etc. The streets will also have pidgeons, crows, ravens and the like. While on rooftops, Garrett must be careful for one flock of birds could give his location away, or make him fall off a roof !
  • ;)

Keggie 17th Mar 2013 11:10 AM

i quite like the idea of a skyrim style thief game tbh, just 1 HUGE city, and you can visit pubs/taverns etc to pick up information about local rich people to rob. a main quest line that goes all over the city and secondary mission's.. like a underground thieves guild Garrett could rob if he felt like etc... coop thief would be fun on that :P if you die the guards drag you away to a prison, other thieves can free you :P

BrokenArts 17th Mar 2013 11:16 AM

Actually, TDS did have cut scenes, but they were mismatched, and did not have a flow like the original cut scenes did. I had to look on youboob to verify my failing memory. Chief, you need to get with the Dev's and tell them how it should be handled, you take over. *And Taffers across the land rejoiced.*

FixXxeR 18th Mar 2013 05:48 AM

In this day and age, they'll probably name it Thiefcraft. The game now will be;
  • collect 10 loot to craft some metal
  • combine with (obtained or shop bought) bottled burrick gas
  • a small amount of glass
= 1 gas mine

  • 1 wood = 4 arrows
  • combine with small amount of glass
  • combine with water (holy or otherwise)
= 4 water arrows

AHHH I'm getting nightmares already.

I said this when it came out but imagine Mirrors Edge - done in the Thief universe. Running over rooftops, swinging rope jumps etc. Picking up lewt along the way, acrobatic Garret! Would be a quality game.

Antero90 18th Mar 2013 10:00 AM

BA, the cutscenes I mentioned were pre-mission ones with Garret doing his trademark monologue about what lies ahead. TDS only had a wall of text and the monologue.

A Burrick attacking Benny could actually be something that would work out, there were many humorous moments in the previous games and seeing Benny hopelessly trying to convince his comrades that there is a Burrick in the house targeting him is also part of what a Thief should be.

To sum it up, all we want is a game that offers a good taffing experience.

industrialism 28th Mar 2013 06:08 PM

Worried?, surely your not the only one... we'll have to wait and see - but were going to know early on if it's everything one could fear or not.

industrialism 30th Mar 2013 05:44 PM

Waiting for Garrett to speak - don't know about you tafferz.

Keggie 30th Mar 2013 06:01 PM

nice pictures, that last one looks like it was based on London's old tower bridge

[E.D.G]Chief 31st Mar 2013 06:51 AM

The last one is the background of the site :) (the site which completely fails to render properly for me on firefox which is odd).

If it does not have Stephen Russell as Garrett, it won't be Thief.

Keggie 31st Mar 2013 03:41 PM

what about if Garrett is no longer in it? :erg:

But was the Hag a fair lady? :o

I'd say that hopefully SE learnt alot about keeping original voice actors over the Hitman Absolution scandals.

However, wasn't SR on bio inf, and could that have impacted on how much time he had to devote to other projects such as thief.

And is his talent good enough to become a goth garrett ! :D

"I am Garrett, and I'm not a vampire!".

I think the thief will still be called Garrett (or maybe son of Garrett with weird freaky pagan abilities whom he got from his mother Viktoria).

Keggie 31st Mar 2013 04:32 PM

wouldn't surprise me :P i assume its prob going to have a level up ability of some sort like most games now, unlock special Pagan magic ><!

Antero90 31st Mar 2013 06:26 PM

I have seen the gameinformer videos and I can't say im hopefull...

Here we go

I'm not happy, "2014 release" they could rectify this by then... we forgive you?

Aww god I wonder what the ttlg and Thief4 forums are like right now...

No white Garret and a new voice actor trying to impersonate Russel. All the classic tools being shown and a very quick shot of the mechanical bow not to anger the goblin.
Right words used like ghost, timing and oportunity.
First ingame shot is in first person, too bad there is only 2.
Images shown could belong to any thief game, fat loot walking noble getting inside, "oh... big bad guard at the front, will get distracted soon".
Almost perfect until the final bit where Garrett (finally) turns into Neo from matrix. I wonder why the neo-garret detonates the flash bomb when he is already outisde?

Eidos, I hope your homework wasn't all spent in doing this near perfect trailer.

BrokenArts 2nd Apr 2013 06:12 PM

I really hope that is just a stand in as far as the voice of Garrett is concerned. I've read so many people aren't pleased with that voice. Lets hope Stephen returns.

Trapmaster 2nd Apr 2013 06:56 PM

I hope for they keep the universe consistent and not fully "reboot" it ;). As in "Thief 1-3 never happend! There never were any pagans/hammerites/keepers!"

The mechanical eye is still there, so it could point out they keep up the events of the earlier games. But I still say the older factions deserve some appearance or mentioning too.

I wans't so sure if it was a flashbomb, I thought it might be some form of grenade.

My reasoning being - the window Garrett jumps through at the end seems to be breaking before he reaches it - from the force of the explosion say, which I'd have thought a flashbomb wouldn't do.

I totally agree, the hammerites, even though I beat the crap out of them sometimes, I do love them very much. Mechanists, not so much.

Been thinking a bit more about this, hate to be the one to say it.
This title (what ever they do with it) wouldn't work well with the previous voice actor for Garrett now, looking at the artwork and trailer, or even the same voices for the other charcters - simply you would take the game; as starting off after Thief 4... stealing what it is to make something out of essentially nothing people are going to respect with the alterations (like DS all over again but a mega uproar) (limiting the project as it has to adhere to the past and somewhow bring something new to the Thief universe to continue evolving and top the previous *Garretts in deep water part 4*, unless it's a new character and then yea - Garrett could be around, I suppose, which I had considered so you can start again but then you lose Garrett, so you limit the project before you begin-starting off from where Thief DS ended, I'm just wondering how far ahead the team has conceptually thought about this title, Deus ex I can see sequels... Thief *heh*.

That voice actor is so stronlgy associated with the past three games and then the memories expectations etc, it just limits the project, Imagine redoing Thief 2 or even one map from it as a memory to play within this project? you can't really add much new except Graphics unles you rework it (but how much?)- sad yes; also not very entertaining if your a fan allready you know how to beat the map etc *like what they did with the place - really done it up* so there is no point redoing the previous games exactly how they were over again, but for Thief to work today (even for a sequel after this new project, although starting in a late era - how modern is it going to get...) I guess this is what has to be done, also they can go backwards and forwards in time of the title because it's a revision of the storyline and charcter without limitations, if not carrying on where DS left off, it's not going to be the forth or the same voice of the chacter we know, it's capturing a new audiance, with an old tale... that we do know but... everything is different but of the same theme.
