300 ping is better than what us Aussies get on so-called "high speed" connection

I am a noob having started about a year and a half ago. And I STILL play like a noob. That will be my legacy. But I have been kicking butt on UT04.

I thought LR was an OK guy because he stated he puts the toilet seat down. Of course he could have been lying. Then in that case....grrrrr.

btw...what is ping? I know what to look for as 'ping' but what does it actually stand for? And what does LAG stand for?

Ping is the time in mili seconds it takes for you computer to send a packet to the server and recieve it again.
So with a ping of 1000 you would experience a 1 second lag, time that i takes for the server to know what your doing and you to know what the server is doing.

Ping time is latency - how long your data takes to travel to the server and back to your computer. Say, in UT04, you have a ping of 40 - that's 40milliseconds from your computer to the server and back (I believe - might be a bit off, but it'll do as a rough guide). Ping was just the name of a computer tool written by some bloke to check data transfer between two computers.

Lag is when ping times skyrocket for any number of reasons, and you get ridiculous slow-downs or you see people warp around, etc.

Ping = The amount of time in milliseconds it takes a signal sent from your computer to reach the server and back again. so 500 ping is 1/2 a second delay. Ping doesn't stand for anything, but you can "ping" another computer from windows through the DOS prompt. I use it at work for diagnosing network issues.

LAG = A sudden change in ping for the worse, I.E. Suddenly my bro starts downloading cat porn and my Ping leaps up to 2000, because the bandwidth on my connection is all sucked up by him and his feline fantasys. Leaving less for the connection to crackaz. Because I now experiance a ping higher than I would normally I'm Lagging, if my brother stops (or finishes as the case may be!) then my lag will cease.

Often the server "lags" and everyone has a higher ping for a brief period of time.

              Hope that helps.

EDIT : Oh Em JEE! everyone helps the girl!

Don't be so sure. The amount of bandwidth isn't increasing as fast as the amount of information games need to send. The internet technology isn't keeping up with the game technology; pings are getting worse...
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

Clearly the target audience wasn't in need of a detailed explination, just a simple one explaining the terms.

The bloke in question was the late Mike Muuss (for all ya' trivia types).

Another reason zero ping will not happen any time soon (even if they get bandwidth thing figured out) is a server updates information once within a fixed time interval. So, it recieves information from a players computer, does stuff, then sends new information to the players computer. I believe this is why AI do not have zero pings.

I do believe the day to be coming though when connection speed is nowhere near the bottle neck as the server computer itself.
Give some taffer fire, and you'll keep him warm for the night with one less reason to cause trouble for the master.
Set a taffer on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life, and have no need to bother the master.

I may be wrong here but I seem to remember the thievery AI all having 0 ping in an older version. Then they introduced AI with pings because the 0 ping AI were very uber. Hopefully this actually happened and i'm not imagining things.
