I would have thought they'd have to turn it into a phone etc. if they want it to rival the iPhone. Isn't it already better than the iPhone when it comes to games?

Rumours? It has a page dedicated to it in the DSi pamphlet I picked up at EBGames last week. Nintendo DSi Shop - "Download exclusive DSiWare using Nintendo points - exciting games and all that shiz".

    More than rumors then...

The DS can download demos from special kiosks (sometimes found in game retailers) that last until you turn the console off. If you have a Wii the Nintendo channel also provides this functionality.

It's not much of a leap for an upgraded version to use your wifi connection to go online and download a full game. All they have to do is C+P WiiWare and call it DSiWare and stick some memory into the DSi. Badabing! Instant online money vacuum...erm...shop experience fun...thing.

Dunno about the rest but the Steam approach is doing it for me lately. Between a quick browse around earthly shops for absolute bargains, they have it nailed down after you get over the Jurassic view of wanting the box, manual etc, in hard copy. The recent stint of sales and deals has really hammered home their business model I'm sure.

If you go into the Steam store, click All Games and arrange by price ascending, even in the first 10 - 20 games listed, there are some timeless titles in there for like 3. You can't get those prices in the shop...

A few days ago I would've agreed. Last night I couldn't play any of my games, though, because I, along with the rest of the province it seems, couldn't log in to steam. Lame.
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

Agreed, if steam is the way forward they need to find a way of zero downtime because sods law dictates that your gaming library goes down on gaming night!

Don't you need to switch to offline mode first, which requires you being online to start with? I haven't really messed with it myself, I admit.

There is an offline mode? You mean, like, enabling folks without web connection to play games? Oh the blasphemy!

Ah, ok, if it is like you say, and that mode needs to be activated from online, then that calms me down again, a bit. Phew, close save!

(reminds me of "Keyboard not responding. Hit F1 to continue." )

LOL, I've had that, or Broadband suppliers that say "Got a problem with your connection, check our FAQ ONLINE"

I believe that if steam can't contact the server due to network problems of some sort, it will ask if you'd like to start in offline mode. The issue the other night seemed to be that steam servers were up but not functioning correctly -- steam was asking for my password again, and then telling me that it couldn't start.
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

Steam does have an offline mode but from what I hear it's incredibly broken and still occasionally insists you go online to authenticate your games. There are many posts about it online, Google is your friend. I've never had any experience with it because I've never had occasion to use it so I can't make any judgement on it personally.

A recent Slashdot posting has more food for thought about changes in the video game industry.

/likes Steam and doesn't want another game box or manual to clutter up his cluttered closet.

I'm not too keen on the OnLive idea, call me old fashioned but I like to have my box under my desk with my games on it's hard disk.

    Haha.
Good to see some decently healthy competition keeping steam on their toes as well, also the prices have been unified for regions at last.

Offline has always worked fine for me.
Steam sometimes gets a bit weird and asks for my password again etc, I just close it down and restart it to fix the problem, worked every time so far.

If you have a big enough HDD/portable drive, steam also allows you to backup your game files, if you are just *that paranoid*.
