If I was to make a map on my own for this game would the unreal 3 editor be it? The one that comes with Unreal Tournament 3 I mean.

The Maya trial version/student (the free one) that one enough to make models I believe right?

no, you would need the udk editor, it gets updated now n then and has more stuff then the ut3 one, free to download tho. altho it is prob possible to start in ut3 and cut/copy across.. some of it anyway

To map, you would need to learn the SandBox Editor 3, which at the time of writing is unreleased, however a good head start would be the crysis1 demo which comes with sandbox2.

As Keggie says the udk is regularly updated, and comes with no content.

The maya student one should be fine, since its a non-commercial project though I gather Autodesk have made it even more difficult to get a licence now from what I was told.

Looking forward to seeing what comes out of this - there is certainly still, and always has been a huge gap in the online gaming world for a game like TUT, with only the Splinter Cell series ever getting slightly close to being the same kind of ilk. I'm sure everyone who is interested in TUT will be keen to help out in any way they can.

Well XSI is probably the best out of those 25 since of course it's up there with maya and 3ds max.

Of course if you can learn Blender then you have alot of power at your finger tips.

I will say that you want version 6.1 or 6.5 because after those versions Autodesk started cutting content from it.

You will need the following to get involved.

We are primarly using additive mapping, keep this in mind if you wish to contribute to this project, thank you.

Sorry we're not interested in having a website, we plan on sticking with just the moddb page which we'll keep fairly up to date as and when needed.

Oh, one thing not mentioned, unlike past unreal engine games which used FilePlanets GameSpy network for online games, the UDK uses Steam.

As such you must have steam installed (and thus have a registered SteamID) for the UDK to be multiplayer enabled (without steam it is solely LAN only).

Just thought you may all want a heads up on that.

That... isn't technically true. Steam is the default master server for detecting online games (and providing other online services). You can play internet games without it via direct IP connections, or implement your own master server/online service provider.

But presumably you mean that you intend to use the default Steam offering.

hmm that's interesting, since I'd seen people being told it was steam only when they complained about direct IP not working. But we probably would stick with steam anyway

I'm not seeing any particular threads saying direct ip doesn't work any more (certainly work last time I tried). There are some threads mentioning issues with the steam integration which may be fixed by the latest build, and some people having to disable steam in udk when testing with multiple instances (because it doesn't like them connecting multiple times with the same steam id). At any rate LAN support is built on direct IP connection, so I would be surprised if LAN works and direct IP doesn't.

The best thing I can tell you is #1 seems like the Thievery UDK team is experienced so the project does seem probable to complete if everyone is willing to do their part. Secondly as for me I'm doing mostly simple models and will figure out how to texture them. I also will try my hand at mapping. Just keep checking the Moddb page for updates. (I'm just contributing what I can do the project)

    any progress status
We plan on releasing tri-monthly or annual reports on progress depending on how fit we see the release of such information for this long-term project.

Well this is certainly welcome and surprising news! I have not checked these forums since NB/TUT-UT3 was scrapped around a year and a half ago, and here I am on the off chance that someone would take up the gauntlet - and they have!

I waited the best part of 5 years for Nightblade, and was really gutted that it didn't really see the light of day. So I wont have highered expectations for this one...

However I will say its totally do-able on the UDK, and the best part of all is that its completely stand alone... so we wont all need UT3 just to play it.

There is another mod team who have been developing an online Splinter Cell Clone on the UDK called "Project Stealth", they have made massive progress getting networked games going - The whole hiding in shadows premise is the same. Chief you may wanna contact them if you need any advice on where to start.
The project lead is called "Frvge", and may even collaborate if you can offer something to thier project.
Good luck guys I will keep an eye on this and spread the word

Edit: You might wanna talk to the dark mod guys as well and see if they will donate any of their assets to the cause
