Thread: Alien Swarm Pickup Games [Update!]

  1. #1

Cool Serious about Alien Swarm? Then Read inside

#Swarm.Pickup on Qnet is now fully functional!

The channel is designed for ppl who want organised games of Alien Swarm with like minded people without all teh stress of getting together a good group of people to play and a good server to play on, we've done that for you!

We recently recieved 'Official channel' status from the AS team and also got sponsored by Multiplay.co.uk who have gratiously supplied us with 2 servers for the pickup channel!

    Swarm.Pickup #1 runs Single Missions while Swarm.Pickup #2 runs Campaign's

Around 40 users in the channel at the moment bug blasting as we speak!

Very easy to use system, just join the channel and type:

    !add <class>

where <class> is the 1st letter of the player class you would like to be during the game eg.

    !add M

    Will add you as a Medic ( W = Weapons Specialist, T = Tech and E = Explosives )

Come on down and join the bugapalooza in #Swarm.Pickup on irc.quakenet.org

Excellent idea. I'll surely be visiting this channel tonight to get some pugs going.

I'm growing tired of the pub players, but every once in awhile I'll run across a patient and skilled group. I was in a completely random group of 6 last night.... but everyone acted and played great. We walked most of the time...kept formations... and worked as a team. I was amazed at how easily we finished the mission.

These are the kind of groups I'm looking for... and then dive into the realm of "hard" and "insane" difficulties.

Oh the irony. The other kind of groups you will find are teamkilling friendly fire death match players where it takes you 20 tries to reach Williams and on Salvage you never get out of the door. I can't even believe the game I was just in.

Ye...Pickup was great... Damn ye elves and dwarfs for stealing meh cookies!

  15. #15
Pickup is either pretty good or simply terrible

  16. #16
What time EST (GMT -5:00) is pickup usually active? I'm in Indiana, USA. I didn't get wind of it until last night, and by then the room was dead, of course. I'd really like to play with some guys who know what they're doing.

  17. #17
Blah, newbies stay away from pickup if you can, go train pubs, its really not fun when a newbie stays 10 mins away from the team in rescue...

i need help as well as to how exactly i join a pickup game. im in the channel right now but no one is talking. i also saw a message from SwarmPickup

    "SwarmPickup has changed the topic on channel #Swarm.Pickup to Next Up: Map not defined yet - (3/6) M: Xersues/[NiX]oki - T: ?/? - E: ? -W: Isurus @ 212.42.16.54:7777 || | Hosted by www.multiplay.co.uk || Supported by www.utskills.com #utskills"

but i have no idea what all that stuff means. am i supposed to click on something or does someone eventually tell me what server to join?

    Here's how it (should) work:

    • People join #Swarm.Pickup
    • They add themselves using !add <class> e.g. !add m
    • Then you wait around until you have enough people
    • When there's enough people SwarmPickup will tell you the server IP and password
    • You then go into Alien Swarm and enter this server

In practice people often just come along to the server and join without adding themselves on the pickup, and people who did add themselves forget and don't play.

The topic is telling you how many people have been added and their class. Usually there will be someone there to help you anyway.

Sadly it isn't quite working as it should, and pickup servers have been empty lately. There are some flaws that confuse newcomers and drive away regulars, and imo prevent a good idea from flourishing. Among others:

    1) The bot is very basic, and doesn't reflect the state of the server. It merely parrots back whatever people in the channel tell it. There's been a single player added to the pickup for some days in a row, and I don't think he ever joined the server.

    2) What is a map called AO-DanselResearchFacility doing in the MPUK servers? It doesn't send correctly to clients and it cannot be found anywhere. The result is that anyone voting for that map gets the server locked and noone can connect or play anymore.

    3) There are 2 MPUK servers for pickup but only one is advertised in the channel.

The result is that hardly any new players are using the pickup, and old players are migrating to other servers. Unless something changes, pickup will probably disappear soon.

He's still there... maybe some people could come along and add themselves just to get rid of this "barcode" guy. He's not been on the channel since he added himself to the pickup. It just annoys me that every time I join I see he's still there and I know there hasn't been a game for about a week.

EDIT: never mind, we did it \o/

I second that. I'm trying to find it right now so I can clean those servers up.

Talked to some MPUK admins today and they said it will get removed asap. Hope so, there are 3 servers locked on those maps atm. Empty, of course.

i advise u 2 use the All-Seeing-Eye, a program used for connecting 2 game servers. download via http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/
after starting watch the AS-register, there the server should appear (the word "pickup" certainly is in the server name)

EDIT: by the way: is there any possibility to remove urself from the list again? my nick is printed there for days now...

Does the community still use this Pickup as Fwee described at the start of this thread? From reading the posts I see this irc channel #swarm.pickup, is still the main one for AS

The channel is still used, but I think the actual pickup bot isn't functioning as it should.
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

The bot functions, people just don't use it. So no, people don't use it as Fwee described. It's used to chat about Alien Swarm, other things, or (occasionally) to organise a game. If a campaign is running low on players, someone might also call on people in #Swarm.Pickup.
