Yes, you need UT2K4 to play Alien Swarm.

UT2K4 is pretty cheap tho, and it's obviously worth to get it.

I got mine for Black Cat Games stuff only, and that was back when it was still full priced. So stop being so frugal!

I bought UT for Alien Swarm (and Nightblade!). Otherwise I would've just obtained it.

The editors choice CD has bonus packs for UT2004, a selection of mods including Alien Swarm. I heard that you cannot select which mod you want to install, but can only install them all.

And also, it doesn't come with the Linux installer for the mod. =)

DVD would be fine for me. Feel free to get the Editors choice if you're too lazy to download AS. ;-)

Plus Ed's choice gives some new stuff, there's 6 new player models and 3 vehicles for vanilla play...plus some new ONS maps and other schtuff

But ALL of the ECE content is gonna be free off the internet. so ifn you have hte patience to download it , it would be cheaper to get a 30 dollar UT2k4 and then download the ECE stuf than it would be to by a 40-50 dollar ECE UT2k4

Seems like I have to buy UT2004 just because of Alien Swarm too. Well, guess it's worth it. Tho I'm no big fan of UT i must say there are a few nice mods, and this is absolutely the best I've tried so far
    Great work. Keep it up

I don't play much vanilla UT either, bought the game mainly because of the many mods available and in development. I agree with those who say they would pay for Alien Swarm alone what you pay for getting a copy of UT2004. Iím also very curious about Red Orchestra 3.0. It looks hot and plays interesting IMO, but I really suck at it. I have yet to try the latest version of Air Buccaneers and Frag Ops with v2.0 only days away.

The WIP mods The Third Reich and the amazingly beautiful Eon seem very interesting too. Iíve mentioned quite a few that I believe suit my taste, and there are tons more out there. Iíd say UT2004 is by far my best buy ever.

If you already have the game. I wouldn't bother buying the ECE.

If it installs all the mods, then it doesnt need an installer for the mod

Off topic but man Frag.Ops looks fantastic. Guess I'll be downloading it tonight.

I got UT after reading the awesome reviews and the awesome price. I played that for a while until I found Red Orchestra from PC Gamer magazine. Was obsessed with that until I found Alien Swarm from PC Gamer magazine (coincidence? lol). Yeah so I'm pretty much playing mods right now, not vanilla UT. Although thats great too.

certain TC mods don't need the game to play. Like Americas Army. That game uses the UT game engine. then from there you can install TC mods on top of it. Only thing is, I think AA uses UT2003 engine.

That's just a totally retarded reply.

Americas Army is not a modification or total conversion. It's an entire game. The US Army bought a license and build a game with it.

i know, it uses the same game negine... that means that all the files are in the same kind of directories. So it wouldn't be that hard to run a TC mod off of it

Yeah, but that TC mod would still need a game (AA) to play. Which contradicts your claim that "certain TC mods don't need the game to play".

  23. #23
yes... certain mods like AS will need ut2004 because it uses alot of the content (skins, modles, ect)
