    ~10-second system hangup/sound loop

I've been having a recurring in-game freeze with looping sound which tends to last about ten seconds. I've tested most all audio settings, including low detail, not sys driver, etc; also, minimizing graphics options.

A similar freeze occured while playing Myst V.

    Any thoughts?

Append to one of my friend, the problem was the onboard sound card on an Asus P4P800 mobo. If its the same mobo, buy the essential pci Sound Blaster Live OEM for 25$...

I have an Audigy LS, noob. I do suspect it's sound-related though.

Hm. I've started getting 5 second pauses whenever the computer needs to access my C: drive (E: and F: are my main ones).

Anything weird going on with your HD?
Ah, to be a hero. Keeping such company...

Negative, and HDs are set to never powerdown.

...and again...this seems to happen only in UT2k4.

You have a really good sound card Moses. But sometimes, better part of your pc can be the problem... try to unplug the card of the pc, try to play 1 or 2 map online whitout sounds, and if theres lag again, your gonna be fixed.

Have you tried reinstalling windows? Updated the bios with the latest? Just use one for a newer motherboard, it'll upgrade your old one.

The sound looping is a result of the PC freezing, as the card isn't sent any data, it loops what it has in it's buffer.

To make sure it isn't some task lagging you (unlikely) you could try minimise ASw, open the task manager, right click ut2004 and boost it's priority to high or realtime.

A more likely candidate for your problem however seems the athlon/agp freezing bug, try this for a fix. I don't think it can hurt much even if it doesn't fix your problem. And if it does, you'll only be reinstalling windows :p

    Other things you can try:
    • Run your system without the audigy, as suggested.
    • Double or half the "PCI Latency" in the bios.
    • Change the "AGP Aperture size" in the bios.

when i had the problem, the loop would continue even after unreal was closed which sucked. Although this does remind me of that time when i overclocked too much, the pc bluescreeneded and the sound card started playing random midi sounds =D

    Try these kX drivers: http://kxproject.lugosoft.com/
They're far less buggy than the creative drivers, but also far more complicated, and aimed towards musicians, not gamers. That means no EAX, but 3D sound's still there. I'm using software 3D in ASw though.

    In other news ...

Bastards deleted my favorite one, though. It went a little something...like this:

    Asker: blah blah thermodynamics
Durandal: I will assuredly outlast the heat death of the universe. The preparations to my processing core are all but complete.
Leela: Uh, Durandal, you just wrapped your core in Saran Wrap.
    Durandal: It's heat-death wrap!

*sigh* Guess you had to be there.

There will still be 3d sound, just not with the fancy reverb effects and such.
But it's always been broken for me to begin with, i think the sounds play from the marine's pov rather than the camera's
