I find that the multiplayer games are a bit frustrating at times.

Playing as a guard, you automatically KNOW there are thieves about, so when you see a torch go out the reason is obvious.

So as a thief, there is no element of sneakery, which makes it frustrating for the thief.

But on the same note, playing as a guard myself, when I see a torch go out there is a level of certainty that it was done by a thief. Instead of relying on my wits to determine whether it was put out by a thief or not, I already know it was a thief's water arrow. I find that's not challenging enough.

Why not add a level of uncertainty to the torches in the game?

Give them a percentage which would represent the chance of them blowing/sputtering out on their own.

The chances of torches going out on thier own would increase, of course, if the area in which they are placed is either windy, damp, or both.

This way it would be more fun as a guard to try and figure out if the torch went out on it's own, or if a thief is involved. This to me would be more fun.

It would mean more fun for the thieves as well. The chances of torches going out just as you need them to are slim, but at least there is a chance you could save some water arrows. And you could at least put out one or two arrows without raising too much suspicion in the human controlled guards as well, putting the element of sneakery back into the game.

This would also add an element of realism.

    So vote.

Heh. This is my first poll. I hope this one hasn't been done before, because if it has I appologize.

    Take care.

This has been discussed before, and I'm really not sure what came out of it. I like the idea, but I'm not sure we really need more guards flare scanning everything...
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

:? But they do that anyway. And it's no fun the way the torches are now.

Even if this topic has been covered, I think it should be addressed again.

There are areas where it's just too well lit for a thief to make any headway.

OMG, this was brought up almost exaxtly the way you said it, TafferGirl, three months or so ago on the old forum. You sure you never played Thievery before?

Based on what was said on the old forum (too lazy to find link) I don't see this being implimented TUT-wide. However, I do see one or two map designers working this into their own maps, and one may already be making a map that does this. Torches can be scripted to go out randomly. I can see this being implimented in Asylum very well. It would really add to the "creepiness" factor, plus it makes sense with all that pouring rain.

You should bring this up in the Mapping forum.

It would be easy to figure out if the torch went out randomly or because of a thief's water arrow...

Think "water splash on the wall".

    Why "not always"?

But still, I think it's a good idea, anyway.

Yeah, Kewl. Your avatar is creepy. Why not pick something like Fabio or Will Smith or someone from N'Sink, since your name is "Cool As Me".

Well, the watermark on the wall I think would only be noticable from closer inspection, but from a distance I dont think it is obvious. I like the idea too, as it would add some more sneakiness to the water arrows..

I'd say its just a crappy drawing of Homer. Pre-first season stuff.

Good idea, when is it getting moved to suggestions section?

Adding a percentage on torches closer to doors (frequently opened/closed) and others that are outside etc is a good idea.

Heh. I was going to put it there origionally, but when I saw another poll like mine in this forum I decided to put it here.

    Should I move it?

BTW. Even though this issue has been addressed, but apparently unresolved, people still lent their support. Thanks.

its actually recent season.. I modified his eyes to make him look mean.. it actually looked like this:

then with supergoo I made this:

then with paint shop pro i made this:

Compared to the rest of the shitty or just plain weird avatars out there.. I don't think mine should get any publicity. We all know who homer simpson is.. and we all know what he looks like when he's mad. I just gave him a vein in his skull. Not that critical.

KAM your avatar does suck big time, don't get me wrong, Homer rocks, but the "vein" on his head looks like a scratch from something not a popping out cos he is mad thing, and you also dont remind anyone of a Mad Homer so why have you got it?

Agga..with that avatar.. you have no room to talk.. everyone just says my avatar sucks because they know what it is! The rest of you with these less-known avatars just get ignored.

The torch idea is very good.

Well, how about this: the time that the torches take to go out is quite lengthy. That way you don't so much uncertainty, and it becomes more balanced to both sides.

I think this isn't all that hard to code... Plus, it would be a great addition to that great interim 1.2.5 version we are all waiting for...

Erm, I never considered it a job big to be worth mentioning but I scripted this one a while ago (I make a mental note when I see someone suggest an idea that I would like to script, myself)

It consists of TorchExtuinguishers which are placed next to torches & randomly triggered by a master trigger. A level must be modified to use this feature, but if any mappers want to have a look at the script & use it in their levels, they are welcome

    PM me for the script

If Thievery is made mutator-compatible, I'll create a mutator to apply the effect to any Thievery map.

As someone also pointed out recently, even with the torches how they are, water arrows can make a great distraction.

TDan, with all the scripting you've done, have you considered asking the dev team for a job?

Good point. You do a lot of good work Dan. It can't hurt to ask.

I think they've got all the coders they need

Anyway, a lot of my scripts are things that some people are gonna object to, whereas the dev-team somehow manage to please everyone
