To Steam or not to Steam?

AS:I is built upon the Source Engine from Valve and will be available in two versions: 1) a free download (requires Half-Life 2) and 2) a competitively priced commercial version, featuring extra missions, characters, equipment and more!
So, would option 2 avoid Steam all together?

    *dons flame-retardant posting-suit*

Has AS:I been considered for console? Like, we're not talking about an RTS or space sim, here... I think AS would translate well with a minor modification to how aiming works... more Robotron-style, instead of moving a cursor. Consoles are going online in a big way this gen... distribution over Xbox Live Arcade and whatever Sony does might be cheap.

The reason I bring that up, is I got HL2 for Xbox because I didn't want to deal w/ Steam on my PC... I have PC-savvy friends who have had issues w/ Steam. Yes, I know I'm missing out on some great mods, and that FPS are "impossible" to play w/ a gamepad. Frankly, w/ all the Oblivion mods, I don't have time for HL2 mods anyway.

Option 2 won't avoid Steam, it'll just not be downloadable before you pay a little cash
    The *mean French look* haunts...everywhere.

But it will avoid having to have HL2 I believe, so you wont have to purchase another copy of HL2.

As Hurtz said, you won't need a copy of HL2, because AS:I is a game, not a mod.

As Psi said, AS:I is a game, unless you get the free version, which requires Half-Life 2.

As Baz said, it would suck on a console.

As Carth said, PC-savvy friends are overrated.

AS:I would be damn cool on Nintendo: DS.
Ah, to be a hero. Keeping such company...

    Lets just say... No.

I'm probably going to stick with the free version untill I get used to it, so that when I buy it, I won't be pwnd by aliens.

Well, with regards to playing fps on consoles until my mate got an xbox i would agree, but now i disagree; with halo1&2's default controls it works great(if you have 2 hands, which i luckily do). How would an rpg game be any easier with a console anyway?

Sorry, i went throught a stressful period when i was younger when ppl took the piss out of me not knowing what that meant, years ago. Still, compared with the perfection of the way the rest of your writing goes it looks like carp.

Killer, do you honestly think you're the right person to be critiquing the writing of others?

So the free version is not a game?

As Snupper said, the free version will be a stand alone mod of Half-Life 2.

If something is standalone it needs nothing to play it, so its not standalone... It's a mod,

As DQ said, Alien Swarm would be awesome on the DS. The stylus could actually make it work and if you don't believe me, try playing Metroid Hunters.

As D said, there will only be two copies of Alien Swarm made for the DS, and they will be put in a room. But that should be enough.

  28. #28
As snupper said, if that happens, will they make babies?

As Exo said, you can't mix consoles and PCs with multiplayer games or keyboard and mouse would have the advantage.. unless it's dumbed down for the consoles

As Carth said, consoles are dumbed down, but is that a biproduct of the interface, or the intended audience?
