Thread: Hacking.. a minigame

    Hacking.. a minigame

If you never played System Shock 2 - SHAME ON YOU...

If you have, you know what I'm talking about.. hacking into terminals and such was a sort of minigame that wasn't overly difficult, but gave you that extra bit of immersion beyond "Push the use key - done".

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.. having played Natural Selection, System Shock 2, Aliens TC for Quake 1, Aliens vs Predator, Alien Swarm and other various old school games ( Remember Alien Breed on the Amiga? ) I'm visualizing something less arcade-like, more FPS and, ultimately, cool..

Throw in some Star Wars : Repulic Commando and Hidden & Dangerous... I dunno.. this sounds like untapped potential.

  2. #2
Throw in some Space Hulk too...

Something that can be played in two modes.. coop campaign, and multiplayer aliens vs marines like NS... aliens are trying to infest, marines are trying to purge.. battling over control points and resources.

Trying to mix Aliens VS Predator, Star Wars: Republic Commando and Hidden & Dangerous sounds as hard as mixing up a ninja and a pirate and trying to get the hybrid to go into a non-tuned -83 Volvo listening to cheerful summersongs while moshing and driving through the central

But if you'd do it, hey, I'd play it
    The *mean French look* haunts...everywhere.

We were just talking about this very thing on irc the other day I suspect no coincidence! Making the hack a minigame like SS2, or Stolen could make for some very tense gameplay. It would mean good hackers could open doors faster, and screwing up the hack would have consequences. my e$0.01

Though I would suggest that, unlike stolen, the hack interface shouldn't have 2 second keyboard lag.
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

I feel that hacking should be the main part of the game, and all that running around shoot bugs should just be a minigame between hacks.

See.. it just gives more to do. I have a friend who's a math major and I'd rather see him with a calculator in his hand than a firearm.. but to bring him along and in-game computer/terminal interaction while we hold things off.. I dunno.. sounds like it could add immersion, tension and a reason for him to buy me a beer because we ran out of ammo while he surfed for porn on the installation's terminal instead of opening the blast doors.

Waking this thread up a bit to say...

If you got ideas what the actual puzzles would be like I'd be glad to hear 'em out. And I'm pretty sure the actually hard working devs would agree.

I've toyed with couple of concepts but the general concensus amongst people who try them out is that they're too complicated. They seem simple in my mind but that's propably cos my brain is kinda twisted.
Ah, to be a hero. Keeping such company...

What about "copying" the ideas in games like Splinter cell hacking, Or Batman begins?
    Your order has been dispatched!

hey dq, why dont you share some of those ideas?

Maybe check out the container "hacking" in Jets'n Guns if you haven't done already. Basically you attempt to guess a 4 digit number and have 5 or 6 tries. After you placed your guess and hit enter, each digit is replaced by a colored block, red for wrong and not in the number at all, yellow for in there, but in wrong place, and green for right and in proper position. So with your next guess you throw out the reds, leave the greens alone and move the yellows to a different position and see what happens. Variation of the theme with different number lengths, doubles being allowed/disallowed, more or less attempts/a time window before it resets etc. could be used for different hack difficulties.

I know a quite similar game that works with an alphabet instead, and shows in numbers how far you are off, say: if the letter you seek is "G" but you entered an "L" in it's position, you receive a "5" as a hint. Catch is, it goes shortest direction. If the letter is "Z" and you entered "A", you receive a "1", not a "25". The codeword is randomized, but does make sense (can be found in a dictionary) to make life easier.

If that is still too complex, the hacking minigame could be a kind of "support" to the automated hacking. Say, like you have a kinda long and complex password, and the codebreaker that is constantly running in the background reveals random letters every x seconds. If you feel like you know the word you can try to enter it and thus end the hack early.

Maybe that hack should be a Space Invaders clone of your mad softz trying to push past the deadly black ICEs!

you could have a row of lines, and you have to connect the data noobs by shifting the links around (by clicking on the arrows at the sides)

    zomg

higher level hacks could have more squares/colors 3x3,4x4 5x5 etc

Once I actually took a minute to think about what I was doing, it was simple to complete. It's rather easy if you know what you're doing (which is likely a good thing,) but too hard if you don't.
It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

well there you go, a free puzzle game if you get bored

Could be interesting to cross that idea with Neocron's hacking minigame. Randomize a kind of cable "maze", complete with L-shapes, T-shapes, splitters, dead ends, terminators... but all parts shiftable on a vertical axis. After you rearranged the labyrinth in an appropriate way you then need to start a "pulse" that follows the cable pathway on a point of your choice on the left side and it has to reach a certain "end node" on the right side. The hard part would be to check that a solution of the random puzzle is always possible first.

well me and d were discussing some things yesterday, problem is how do you show the status to the rest of the team, you cant really have a bar which shows progress or a "hack at 50%!" thing, which just kinda leaves the rest of the team sitting around not knowing whats happening with the hack

Audio cues! a noise when an attempt is made, an noise if an attempt fails and a noise ftw.
Its not like the moronic autogunners and demo men would understand the gibberish that a true hacker would grasp

Sounds like Rocket Mania, but with less Asian stereotyping.
