You would have to put it away to draw the crossbow. That balances melee if the damage was cranked up a bit and you could have a torch burning at the same time.

Or use oil on thief and throw a torch at him.
IMO thieves in TUT are too easy to burn...

But how do you dispose of a burning torch like that? Looks like that's one of the reasons why we have those clumsy flares in TuT.

What if it was a open oil lamp then? would be more period.

I doubt any player would wonder how it gets lit and doused. I mean flares in thievery just magically sprung to life without any 'oops let me grab my tinker-box animation'. The flares themselves are totally out of place, but no-one ever cared.

The flares seem like they would fit in a Hammerite Monastery, with all the gadgets they make, but not for normal guards. Also, the only thing that could be done with a torch is to drop is, much like in Gothic and Blade of Darkness, and then you can pick it up again when you're done.

Or you can be like Aragorn and lob torches around when you need to, but sticking it in your pocket while you draw your crossbow is a no no.

*cough* Original Unreal-Flare code and textures . Also green light looks abit odd (I think it was meant to look like the original thief flares)

I have a suggestion.

A light crystal.

This would be one of those crystals you see in the cave walls in TUT and the Thief series, but in a fancy hilt, a bit like a sword, but shorter.

I've got two ideas on how the guard should hold this -
1. Hold it in the left hand so you can draw a one handed melee weapon in the right hand, or...
2. hold the light crystal in the right hand and you can use it as a weapon, however, two cons to this would be weak damage and of course being a crystal, fragile and would smash if hit too many times against a hard surface/thiefs head.

The 'light' itself could be weakish and watery, inconsistent a bit and the block function could make the guard hold out his arm to gain a few extra feet of light in front.

hehe, so not gonna be called a light gem then

I like that idea, but rather than a hilt I think it should be golden wire wrapped like a champagne cork, and you just hold it glowing in your left hand

problem with a crystal is that it makes no sense when you start relighting things with it.

IMHO it would be too powerful. That's why you can't pick up whistler when it's lighting...

Tinderbox?

@Bandit -I don't know if it'll be overpowered, you wouldn't be able to 'throw' your crystal like flares, and you could only hold it with a one handed weapon... so no throwing a light source and getting out your xbow. It's six and two threes.

Plus as I said, the light wouldn't be fantastically bright, but just enough to hi-light any tea leaves in any corners.

I want a candle on the brim of my hat so I can say, 'You no take candle.'

And then I can just relight torches with my head. Everyone can relight with their hands, but headlighting is just a novel and cool idea, and I think that's what the entire Thief series is about.

Support thief - support candle hats.

Maybe we can flip this around:

Change the setting of Nightblade to underwater, with thieves as dolphin-people and guards as shark-people.

Instead of torches we can have glowing coral - guards can break some off the wall as a temporary light, but it soon dies. The coral also dies when exposed to air. Thieves have a limited supply of air-arrows, and can also blow air out of their air-holes. Guards can replant coral on the walls if they grab it from one place and put it where there used to be coral.

Thieves are more acrobatic then guards so they will be able to "jump" over them.

Wow, that idea sounds great! Can I stick an air arrow up each nostril so I can breath underwater, or will you be nerfing that to promote game balance?

...

this is ridiculous.

Also, clearly the sharks have the advantage because they don't have to go up to the surface to breathe.
