Shocking news! They are dropping XP AND combat. I wonder if we will have the Burricks back by February.

Aww, I quite liked the XP system. Still, this makes me confident they'll deliver something that Thief fans will enjoy!

For those that haven't seen this. Its, interesting. It certainly has piqued much interest. I shall remain on the fence, and just see what they deliver. Whether this video is just the back story, or will this come into play, who is to say.

Thanks BA. I'll admit that i felt quite negatively towards the project from the start, mostly because of lore/story related issues. Although now there have been quite a few signs that the the original Thief and the new incarnation seems to be connected after all.

I am willing to give them a chance... i did the same with DX:HR and that turned out all right. At if it does suck..? We still have Dishonored to take its place .

I had the same thoughts about it, but the trailer looked promising. The story sounds interesting and still seems to take place in the same universe. Though I still haven't seen any pagans or hammerites (Maybe the story explains it? But it does not look that way) .

Thank you Keggie. I still lurk and try to see what is going on around the Thief universe, pass along what I know. The only reason I mentioned TDM in this thread, to me, and this is strictly my opinion, Dishonored can't come close to Thief. TDM for me is more of a newer version of Thief than anything we have. Leave it to the fans to create something close to the original. Dishonored is its own great game.

Be warned that even tho it's absed on the Doom 3 engine (or is it id tech 4 now?) The DarkMod can be heavy in some older systems.

Its not really an issue these days. It would have to be a pretty weak system not to be able to handle TDM. If someone can't, they should go play Candy Crush.

Well, I guess it's time for me to play Candy Push. Mapping is over!

It's ok tho, my desktop is now about 10 years old and so far the only thing it really chokes on is Project Cars. Most expensive machine I ever bought but worth every single penny. Times are not good for an upgrade at the moment, and I really stopped following the cpu scene. I think the TDM performance is probably down to 2 things, CPU intensive and the fact I turned on everything, which is just asking for it. I recall playing the earlier versions and having no issues.

Edit: Hmm... turns out my desktop is not yet 10 years old, I found the original thread for it and it's from 2006.

Obviously relevant:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014.../thief-review/

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014...ce-for-us-all/

The 'no jump', the QTEs. and the story...man. The article's later points are tempting, though.

Not sure about the story yet.

Stealth mechanics are pretty nice but you need to get used to it . The hushing from shadow to shadow works in most cases, but still you need to rely a lot on creep(-crouching) as that hushing can alarm sleeping guards.

Is Alfonso an innuendo/easter to Thievery? Supposing Alfonso was first introduced on a thievery map?
Theres a clothier called alfonso where you have to steal something off his shop.

I think you mean Alonso. He was balantly copied by that creep of a Ferrari driver.

Anyway, I played a bit now and it doesnt look too bad for the moment. It did confirm my suspicions that it would use tech from Thief 3. Or at least it felt like Thief 3 in many aspects.
Looks thievy, seems to have some side exploration, swoop doest seem as overpowered as blink and turning off visual aids makes it close to the older ones. Unfortunatley I cant bring myself to turn off the light gem so no full score boost for me. Yes, no free jumping but there are a handfull of places to mantle so for a while you can forget jumping, you can also fall off from ledges so some effort was taken in hidding the railing.
It's also not too taxing on my laptop and it's actually fun to use the gamepad.

Will post more as I continue the taffing, trying to keep a low profile as possible.

I miss: (so far)
- objective ding
- hammers
- the old health bar
- the quotings
- modding tools

Not much humour so far and those menus.... argh! I almost ragequit when I saw that Disonored inspired main menu.
Ah yes, I can confirm the glowing loot is still there BUT its part of the aids that you can turn off. Minimalist project fans will love those options.

Thumbs down

It's Batman... It reeks of Batman.

Everything about Thief is Batman... UI, Sounds, Soundtrack, Focus mode, CLAW, AI stealth awareness icons, menus, main menu screen, challenge mode, interaction prompts, partner [Catwoman]... And takedowns... Including a few mechanics on a functional level.

Thief reboot = Dark Knight without a flying cape.

I have not gotten to the Baron yet, but I bet he has a big grin and laughs like a maniac.

Oh, hi btw.

Recent review from the New York Times

Recent New York Times review based on the Xbox version:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/26/ar...-patience.html

My favorite line (adumbrating the M rating): "It has profanity, arrows that choke people and a brothel filled with naked people who moan very loudly."

So it can't be all bad.

Hi Gullonefox, nice to see you. :-) I haven't gotten the game yet, not sure I will. At best a *meh* game, though some seem to like it. The reviews and the fan reactions aren't good enough for me to run right out and buy it. Bargin bin if I do. I'm sure it has some redeeming qualities, not much from what I've heard.

NY Times should have called it *Sprinter Thief*. haha.

Sprinter Thief, I like that!

After playing the first few missions I'm pretty much done. You are best off holding onto your loot, and do as you said; await the bargain bin. Such a shame as it could have been so good.

Too many frustrations with it to carry on.

Doubt they made money on it, so no doubt it's R.I.P to the thief franchise for a long time to come...

If you have ever disliked thief 3, it's time you say, that was not a bad game at all, after playing thief 4 for a bit.

Frustrating athmosphere, where i feel not a single bit of it. Thief 3 had quite a nice athmosphere, not to mention FANTASTIC thief 3 score by Eric Brosius, and interresting sound design. Here, in my opinion, the soundtrack is just without a soul, just "to be there", not to help the game, improve the athmosphere.

Guards, doing just 1 hit and starring at you, like telling you: hey player, you have been hit, it's better for you to run now! Where guards in previous games, made it a short process with you. Also thief 1-2 guards, were at leasting knowing the sword fight, parrying, swinging etc, here you just geting stabbed, with same hit over and over again.

Fucking imperialistic ww1 helmets, don't ask me why, i just don't like them.
Probably i could tell a lot more, but why bothering, the best feeling i can discribe when playing this game: the game feels wrong. It doesn't hook you, to play more and more. Boring story, and dull characters.

Advanced difficulty settings, this is really a big plus for the game, without it, i might just have ended playing it, after 2 minutes.

The mission, wher you have to rob the masks, well, it felt slithly more thiefish, for some reason, but so far, this is the only mission, i had some slight flashback to previous series.

Have yet to complete it, i'm in chapter 2, but already lost the mood, to continue playing it.

I agree NeuroFunker. I already thought that about Thief 3. I bet Thief 3 looks pretty good now to a lot of people! Myself included. Its been ages since I played it, I might give it a whirl soon.

Eric, Eric, Eric. His music, is on my mp3. Yes, Thief music is on my player. haha. Laugh what you will. His style and his music brought soul to Thief. The sounds, the ambients, carried me through the game, the sounds sucked me in to an already immersive game.
That old engine with its sound propagation runs circles around this game, I dare say, am I close?

I have read some people do like the game, of course, not everyone will hate it. But overall, its just not there. I'm glad Stephen Russell wasn't a part of this game. He had the best of the series, and we should be glad he did.

Thief changed my life for me in so many ways. Sounds stupid, but, I know I'm not the only one to feel like that. I'll just keep my memories, and continue to play FM's and the Dark Mod, which really is the new thief for a lot of people. The Dark Mod team is finally getting some recognition, which they greatly deserve.
