I'm unsure if the GFX card in your laptop is going to be compatible with the latest games, I was wondering if you had anything recent which was intensively 3D that does work.

If you arn't going to buy a game you'll have to find one for free online somewhere which uses Direct3D.

I believe so.

Are your graphics drivers up to date?

Have you tried leaving it a while, is it possible it's just taking a heck of a long time?

If all you want to do is test your system you can probably find free demos of many recent games. Steam should have lots of free demos available to download.

Try adding -safe to the game launch options. If it works change to a resolution that should work and remove -safe.

Minimum requirements are listed as :

Graphics: DirectX 9 compatible video card with 128 MB, Shader model 2.0. ATI X800, NVidia 6600 or better

I've been to the intel website and it seems there are many cards within the "mobile intel (R) 4 series express chipset family" so I am unable to determine if you have the above or not.

Did you try the -safe option yet?

Laptop specs

The Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD has support for pixel shader 4.0, but has reviewed terribly as a gaming chip(games run, but badly).

Right click Alien Swarm in Steam, choose Properties, then choose Set Launch Options.

Enter -safe and ok out of everything.

Try the game.

Not if you turn UAC off(to install anywhere and run anything) and enable test mode(to install unsigned drivers).

I really like 7 other than having to make those tweaks.
