I used to think similarly; I suggest that, perhaps, you just haven't seen one that suits you.

You might try Excel Saga, Paranoia Agent, Azumanga Daioh, or Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya; try before you buy, wherever fansubbed torrents are sold.

The problem I used to have with anime is that those that I'd seen were too damn serious. I never liked the so-called classics (AKIRA, Studio Ghibli's, Ghost in the Shell) All the best ones, IMO, are comedies.

I'm a big fan of anime, although I like some of the serious stuff as well as the comedy. Azumanga Daioh is great.
