Stealth Games

One is looking for some stealth games to play, new/old, game/mod don’t matter (PC mainly if possible), was surprised there was no stealth game list here tbh. any thoughts/suggestions? Don’t mind killing but game play based on stealth is requested, (ability to avoid enemies rather then fight them if possible). list below is games off the top of my head, although cannot recall if ass creed 2+ can be classed as stealth, 1st game i recall been rather stealth like, only killing the 1 key target and running like hell and hiding to escape, then from 2nd game onwards just slaughter everything with no problems.. have to see if I can replay them without killing, will add any suggestions to the list

Arguably games like ARMA.
Lots of indie stuff (not all of which I liked) such as Mask of the Ninja, Stealth Bastards, Trilby: Art of Theft, an absolute ton of stuff I can't think of right now...
Uplink?
At least one of the Journeyman Project games
Some roguelikes
Uhhh, I'm kinda digging here...
Monaco (upcoming)

METAL GEAR (not that I recommend it...oh, and there's a Xmas themed one, called Merry Gear. I don't recommend the sequel though.)

You forgot Thievery2, okay so there's a couple sub-machineguns in it (for Indus' DM needs) but it's still considered a stealth game

Mark of the Ninja.

Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena + Escape from Butcher Bay. Most definitely stealth games.

If you're including Deus Exes, include Alpha Protocol too.

If you're including Assassin's Creeds, I think Batman: Arkham Asylum + Arkham City can be added too.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, if played as a Nosferatu?

Velvet Assassin? I think it was very similar to Hitman games. Death to Spies series seemed to be same style.

Condemned: Criminal Origins perhaps, or was it more just a melee-focused horror game instead of sneaking, I can't remember? Kind of like Penumbra.

Manhunt games belong here too

For stealth multiplayer, The Ship / Bloody Good Time invented the "hiding in plain sight" style which the Assassin's Creed series cloned from Brotherhood onward.

How could I forget Penumbra/Amnesia?!

Good suggestions here. Makes me believe I've played every stealth game worth playing (and plenty, listed, that weren't).

ah thx for suggestions, forgot bout a few of them. added them all to the list, will work my way through them when i get the chance i guess stealth games come down to how you play them.. playing farcry 3 atm and theres stealth in that, silent kills with a knife, sneak into places to disable alarms and running like hell and hiding when spotted..i recall in dark messiah you could upgrade skills to be fully invis in shadows too or just run in and kill everything.. any other thoughts in future feel free to post and i will keep the list updated! thx

Wouldn't that make games like Jagged Alliance 2 also stealth games? Not sure about the sequel, but the original could be basically stealthed or sprinted through up to the Queen herself.

Commandos 2 had a lot of hide and seek.
Guards have line of sight, as in, they don't see you on their backs and if there is something between you and them. Actions had different noise levels that if too high (like firing a canon) would alert the whole base. One of the characters had a specific noise making ability. Not to mention 2 agents with disguise abilities, the use of fire arms, while possible was very very risky.

Until you found out the "firing squad sploit".

Underrated stealth elements in Dark Messiah. Corny game but well worth a playthrough as a fighter, wizard and everyone's favorite... thiefy rouge type.

Sniper Elite.

Also the TV Tropes article, though they can be a little liberal as to what qualifies for these sorts of labels. Much like how people keep calling Alliance of Valiant Arms an "MMO" despite meeting exactly zero of the requirements for being massively multiplayer.

duno, not played it like i said it depends how you play it. playing farcry 3 in stealth made it much more fun for me altho i wouldnt call it a stealth game. it certainlty has some good steath options. Might split the list in 2 and have 1 for full stealth games and 1 for elements of stealth

Yeah, its spreading like wild fire, and I dunno, just can't get excited about it. We'll see, at least there is some news. I'll play it anyway. Word has it, its a Dishonored knock off, sad.

Looks tell you nothing, Thief 3 was a good example of a game that had the right tools but used them in every wrong possible way. If this game has the looks of Dishonoured (which I have not played) but pulls off a good Thief, then it's fine by me. We will never get the classic look back unless they return to the Dark Engine.
On the other hand I cannot see why they need to reboot the series.
How much do we know about Garret? 3 games later he is still very much an enigmatic anti-hero and that's it. Thief is hardly what I would call a life story, it's more about the plots Garret get's wrapped into.
Anyway, the development of Thief 4 has been a game of stealth in itself.

I do believe no truer words have been spoken Antero. *Development of Thief, a game of stealth in itself.*

Odd, I have tried countless times to ghost near my cows and sheep and they always make that "sigh... I see you" look.

edit: I will try Dishnoured a bit later, last time I checked they were still into DLC territory.

Also, that sneaksy Kerrigan will be making her re-debut tomorrow and im a sucker for Starcraft, despite that somewhat disjointed plot in Wings of Liberty.

There are no zombies or haunts in my farm. The ducks and chicken are too small, I have to practice with whatever I have. (and I admit, newborn sheep just scream for a "cuddle me!")

Condemned had stealth? XD

Pretty comprehensive list id say. Possible additions :

- Stalker : has "Stealth" in both the sense "this thing might kill me so avoid" and (more towards the endgame) "is this worth spending resources e.g bullets, health kits on"

- Aliens vs Predator 2 and to some extent the new AvP : The alien is very fragile and you have to rely on hiding, surprise attacks and separating enemies. Predator is beefier but you can ninja around alot (what with the cloaking and spearing heads to walls while going hohoho and all that jazz). Pred gameplay in the new one is kinda strange tho, theres predefined lurk locations you can jump to, awkward to play, cant really describe it.

- The first Far Cry : Ultimatively you gonna shoot dudes loudly (cant remember if it had silenced guns) but in most of the jungle sections you can creep from bush to bush unseen and even whack some dudes with a machete without anybody noticing. If you shoot dudes and everybody comes running you can bolt and hide (the Ai has alert statuses and will search based on area last seen and such). Its generally not wise to be "out in the open" because a) even normal and especially snipers have huuuge and i mean HUGE sight range. If someone looks at you and youre not in a bush or very far away theyll see you mostly b) theres mostly so many dudes you cant rambo all of em without taking a beating. Downside may be theres lotsa straightforward fps sections and it also has mutant monsters

- (since Commandos is in the list) Silent Storm : has a scout class which can hide and silenced weapons and such (gets actually pretty op with higher levels)

Mark of the ninja is indeed awesome (got it as gift so 2x the awesomeness ^^). Now im just enjoying it doing a little bit of stealth and doing the objectives (higher scores than Keggie ). After ill unlock the hard difficulty ill try do a complete ghost run. Now that will be challenging!
