(Edit: Whoops, I completely missed that there were two pages. and that I'm wrong, because I don't have lots of practice, only theory. Oh well, +1 )

With a barrel lock, you need a tension wrench to turn it. Applying tension is such a simple thing to do that it doesn't really necessitiate a control other than the reset lock button: that implies it.

A barrel lock has a set of split pins that stop the barrel from turning within the housing, but if each pin is positioned correctly, the bottom half rotates with the barrel and the top half stays in the housing. Why keys are shaped how they are should be pretty obvious from that.

Tension keeps the upper half of each solved split-pin in place while you use a pick to reposition subsequent pins. As soon as you pop the last pin, the lock can then turn, but if you let the tension off at any time before you turn the lock, all of the pins fall back into place and you have to start again. If you push a pin too far up, then the bottom half of the pin is wedged by the tension, and you have to let them all drop and start again.

The game is fairly realistic, the only difference is that you don't have to pick pins in a certain order on a real lock, and being able to see the pins rather than feel them is what makes it so much easier.

I think the whole game is pretty easy, its definitly interesting. If lockpicking is this easy it makes me wanna go out through the right channels and get some.............just in case I forget my keys or something (or someone else's keys ). Heh heh heh. *holds up hands* Joking.

But if you really screwed up picking and pushed to hard on the bar, then it would take you a while to notice you did, or unless you're good enough and had enough experience. Hmmmmmmm tempting

*Waves hands around*Joking

Must......not.....be........tempted.........

DQ explained it pretty well. After you put tension on the lock, if you bounce the pin upwards just enough, it'll kinda get stuck in that position. Then you move on to the next pin, and repeat until they are all stuck, and then the lock opens. I dunno the details of it, bet I get bits of info here and there from my friend. It sounds easy to do, but don't think you can just pick a lock with a paperclip. Though you may be able to get a few pins to set, it helps ten-fold to have a real set of lockpicks.

Depends a lot on the lock. I've managed to open two different locks repeatedly with a paper clip and one other occasionally with a needle...

Of course diskette cases don't count, since they can be opened with a fingernail.

Just that I don't have proper picks and proper locks to train on. (The common Abloy ones here in Finland are practically unpickable. You'd probably need some uber-leet secret method to open those)

I haven't tried the game (yet) but when watching the Nightblade trailer, isn't there some kind of lockpick puzzle seen when the guy goes to open a chest? I think I noticed it a couple times, but brief.

Had a friend who got some lockpicks from his Dad's work, a set with about 12 different picks and such. He said it was time-consuming and very difficult to be able to spring a lock and he could only open simple locks and such.
Guess that means locksmiths have to know their stuff.

It's not all that hard to get lockpicks, as some people seem to think it is. For example, a simple lockpick search on google brought up http://www.lockpicks.com/store.asp as the first result.

Welcome to catch 22! You get bitched at* for opening a new thread about an existing topic and you get bitched at* for necro-posting but nowhere is it ever explained where the magical cut-off is between the two. Personally I've never seen the issue with reviving old threads unless it's done just to be a dick.

*Not referring to current administration, it's a general internet forum thang.

Seems that this guy has made a forum account just to ask this question, so I would guess he is genuinely interested.
So instead of accusing him for thread necromany or something, we could simply point him to the fact that DeepQuantas, who made the lil game searched for, is still using this forums, and it may be worth a try asking him personally, there is a chance that he still has it somewhere.

Oh, wow. I don't even remember what it looked like.

I don't think I'll be able to find it anytime soon what with all the formats and reformats that have taken place in these six years.

There is a difference between *accusing*, and simply making a comment. If he would of given more information, like, did he really try and search the net for the info? I'm going to assume he didn't. Yeah, he asked for someone to send him the link. So? We didn't come down on him lightfoot, we simply made a comment, we could of been worse. I know it, I would hope you'd know it too. How little you think of us.

Ehm, no. In fact I think you moderators are doing a great job. I am sorry if it came out wrong.

Just thought that what is obvious to you, may be less than obvious to him. And probably so, or maybe he wouldnt have asked in the first place.
You didnt accuse him of anything -pardon the wrong word choice- but you didnt point him into the right direction either.

I think the fact it wasn't locked shows good faith. But let's not take it any further off-topic.
