If you are talking about Virtual dvd-cd drives try DAEMON toolsonly problem with this is that most games will check for the actual diskso you should look for the fixed exe just becareful that you do not dl a virusI use this method to play games without fear of the disc being scratched.

I want a way to share a device across a network as a device, not a "shared folder"

I use Daemon tools for all my virtual drive needs. Which is a lot. Keep it up to date for best results and combine with other tools such as Yasu for reliability. Note that I did have a version of Daemon that didn't work on Vista but that updating fixed.

I believe this will share over network connections too as I have a similar configuration at work for testing CD releases of our software before burning them. I have umpteen bloody computers there

Of course your obviously backing up your own software which you legitimately own and require this information for educational purposes only.

no, that maps a shared folder, not the device itself.

personally i use powerISO... it supports more formats than daemon tools, and doesnt install a passthrough driver

Even talking about this is a violation of the DMCA!!!

If you don't know the glory of the DMCA in your own country yet, don't worry; you soon will!

wow that's weird, i read that as DCMA and entered it in wiki, and it suggested that i was wrong and i meant DMCA and damn i read it wrong...

Either way, how is using a device accross a network, or mounting an ISO file as a drive violation of the DMCA? It's only such if you're doing it to violate copyright protection...

It was a comment on how a program that can be used to 'facilitate' copyright infringement are supposedly outlawed in a overly broad sort of way (making of or trafficking in a device that circumvents DRM measures). It was an alarmist joke that wasn't very funny, IMO, so I'd politely like to let it rest.
