  • Ghost Servers

I've every intention of setting up the RLF server as a ghosting server as soon as I get it upgraded a wee bit this weekend. I might only be able to set it up for 6 people but it is a start.

I was hoping that somebody out there with a better server than I've got might be willing to host a ghost server as well. What I'd like is a password protected server that is available only to those who are interested in something other than DM.

As it stands now we are having incredible games ruined by a single DM'er who logs on and destroys the fun of 4-6 people who were enjoying a ghosting match. The DM'er isn't breaking the rules, but they are destroying the balance of the game. (Ironically enough, thieves complain about it because the DM'er wastes lives and leaves nothing behind to ghost past)

Is there anybody game to give this a try?
I know of at least 10 people (regular players) who would find this a welcome change of pace.

    Thanks.

Nah, I'm being a bad influence on Gerbil. I'm making him into a ghoster...
Nearly all men can stand adversity -- if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.

I enjoy either side of a ghosting game.
As it stands now, I don't enjoy thieving or guarding
very much on a DM'd game.

This is actually a good idea! Counting on the fun we all had during the RLF skirmish, where the thieves were actually ghosting, I say YAY! This is going to be good!

For a "ghosting" server, are there any settings that need to be changed? I would be willing to password protect the "Team ORJ" server if needed, so only those who joined would know that it is meant for ghosting.

But just so I'm clear: "ghosting" means what? No killing? No KO's? The KO part would be my achilles heal... To date, I'm not yet a true thief...

I'd be interested in playing on a ghosting server.

However, I don't think "no KO" or "no Kill" should be enabled. This would force thieves into the "extreme ghoster" role, which IMO is nowhere near as effective as a "ghoster, but willing to KO if pressed" role. If I'm chasing Freaky_Alien (who is an excellent ghoster, but hey, everyone gets detected SOMEtime), I know I can follow him into darkness without fear of being KO'ed. This is just plain silly - if he KO'ed once in a while when a guard chased him into darkness, then he would be a much more effective thief, since guards would be more reluctant to follow him into the dark.

Yeah, that's the best method of play.

The point of ghosting is not to be seen, so If you're getting chased into the dark, it's your problem, and if so you should get into that darkness and not be seen again anyways. Also, everyone knows some moron is just gonna come in and DM if there's no limit.

"Ghosting" is what I thought it meant for playing as a thief:

                      - DO NOT be seen.
                      - DO NOT be heard.
                      - DO NOT kill.
                      - DO NOT knock out (KO) guards.

I would be willing to play this way. I have been trying to play that way when I play in "Solo Games". It is difficult, but very statisfying when done well.

Are there any settings that a server would need to have changed to make it a "ghosting server"? Of course having it passworded would make sense because it would keep out the DM'ers. Like I stated earlier, I'm willing to password "Team ORJ's Server" if needed.

Let me know if I can help out, or join you guys.

Have fun trying to ghost a map with at least 2 guards sitting in a tiny room, with mines, trops and boxes on a ruby.... (who are shadow slashing also )

Maybe offer 100 or 200 more loot for thieves so they can get through barricades like that.

Done it. It's actually not that hard. In situations like that, ghosting is all about deception and distraction. I've gotten rubies, the lyre, and other camped objects from under the nose or Gerbil, the rest of the RLF, and whole guard teams on public servers. And I'm not even that good of a ghoster. Teamwork helps -- solo ghosting can be hard.
