Once, the Fae folk dwelt just beyond the firelight, off in the woods, taunting the world of man, sometimes stealing a child, ruining a crop, or luring an innocent into the fae ring for a night of revelry or humiliation, only to return him weeks, months, even years later. The FAe always had an odd sense of humor.
But the circles of light grew, and the Fae were pushed back. Eventually, highways and national parks and tourists left them with no home. So they're gone now, aren't they?
But consider: Stories of alien abduction abound. Still, people are taken off to be subjected to horrible "tests" or invited to witness delights beyond the imagination of man. Sometimes crops are smashed flat, or livestock left dead. We may not think some of these things are funny, but is that a chuckle from the aether?
The woodsie folk are still out there, beyond man's circle of light.
