GUITAR WORLD's 100 Greatest Heavy Metal Guitarists Of All Time - Jan. 23, 2004

The March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine includes a list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists as selected by the magazine's staff. "This is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique (although many players on our list have all of those arrows in their quiver)," the editors stress in the accompanying introduction. "It is, rather, a tribute to the great men who shit iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier."

Wow, I like Heavy Metal and all but, I don't even recognize half the names.

Y'know, what I noticed about people and music artists nowadays? Is that people act as if they are heroes that saved the world by winning a war single handed. Tons of people revere them like a Jesus Christ humping a guitar, y'know. But when it comes down to making a difference in world events or saving lives they can't even take care of themselves most of the times (Cobane). Even when you put them in equivalence to anything medival they where called minstrels and bards and it they didn't do well enough, they'd starve, if they did, then they'd have enough money to eat for maybe a day. But they never made a dynamic effect on society, they just pass on the songs of yore' or make new ones that enough people would care to remember to pass on.

I guess they're for culture wise, everyone at one level needs to hear music in some way or another. (I kinda doing a self done experiment going on for a few years to see if I or anyone can go for a day, without hearing music, humming, singing, or even playing it in your head, even as the background noise as you think, so far I haven't succeeded)

It's not like I'm flamming Heavy Metal or any music its a big part of our lives. I've just noticed that people (at least some) nowadays just take it to extremes, and just relies on whatever they listen to like it is some tangible object thats gold plated and will save there life and anyone else who agrees with him. (We've all been through High School, y'know what I mean). It's not going to save someones life when a sociopath is about to cut you up, or bring you back to life when its still playing in the car wreckage because the radio hasn't gone out yet. I also find it ironic (even though it can't save you physically), people kill THEMSELVES over either current events about the band or how the music has "changed". I appreciate it, but I wouldn't go life and limb for it.

You think I ranted on enough? *Puts knife through heads* *feels better*

hmm I personally wouldn't consider Van Halen as a "Metal" band, but he is one damn good guitar player!

I never listened to anything else, I also play in a metal band. But I hang around with many "hiphopers" so I know a lot of that too.
I respect every kind of music and like all (except of Gabba and Schlager).

Heavy metal is rubbish. The only people on that list who aren't idiots are Jimi Hendrix (because he wasn't a heavy metal-er) and Nigel Tufnel (because he doesn't exist).

personally i dont think hendrix was an impressive guitar player at all.. He had no exciting riffs or chords, or even any fancy finger work. He was only known for his stretched out chords, and His amp and echo did all the work for that, he just used it different than most guitar players at that time to maximize his acid trip. He was more image than skill, its just the way he sold the package.

I never saw the Jimi Hendrix package, but I still loved the music when I heard it...

                          And yeah... Heavy Metal? Wtf?
Ah, to be a hero. Keeping such company...

I've gotta agree with Curu here, those numbers are horrible. I mean, what the hell is AC/DC doing up there? I have friends that have played guitar for 4 or 5 years and they can play pretty much anything ever done by them. I don't know if it's considering how heavy metal they are (which, if it is, it's doing a horrible job of, since most of the artists there aren't heavy metal), but they need some work on that chart. Put Van Halen up to the top for starters, and Jimi nearby.
