  • Player Maps

The ones you have to download. That don't come with TUT. Do you like them? Are they any good? Which ones have you played? Which ones should be part of the normal rotation on the popular servers? Seems that only the TOB server hosts them currently, and the good ones need to be recognized. Post your thoughts below.

    *GENERAL DISCLAIMER FOR ALL*

This thread is not meant to demean any mapper, but rather to point out which maps are 'cannon' and possibly assist other maps to become better. Remember, the more maps we have out there, the better it is for TUT in general.

I rate maps using two categories: gameplay (ballance, fun-ness, creativity) and visual appeal.

Disclaimer: I don't want to make any enemies here. I'm just providing opinions, and hopefully the criticism here is constructive.

Archery - Awesome map. Very well done in both categories. A must download!
Docks - Ditto here too. A few minor bugs need to be worked out. The biggest bug being the strobe lightning present in multiplayer but not in solo.
Ancient Ruins - Ditto here too. Clever implimentation of the red crystals.
Kings of the Desert - Great gameplay. Extremely amateurish looks. All in all, I'd say go download that one too.
Bafford - Not that great of a map. It's a cheap copy of a Thief mission, does not match the quality of the original in expansiveness and refinement, and a lot of cool hiding spots and secret areas were not implimented. In addition, one door does not work, making guarding the scepter in the throne room 95% guard friendly. Because it's a copy of solo mission, the majority of the map is linear in design, a bad thing for multiplayer. Don't download.
H-20 Horrible map. It fails both my categories. Don't download. There's a thread on this somewhere on this forum.
Thieves' Den - Ho-hum. It's OK. Deathmatch -- thief style. The coolest part about this is the music. I wouldn't bother with this one.
Sword Arena - Another below average map. Haven't played this as much.

There are a few other maps I didn't mention, but I'd rank them below Thieves' Den.

You can download maps at http://www.tearsofblood.com.

Are any more user maps nearing completion? When's Breandor coming out? What's up with Payback?

I used to keep saying that I'd get my map finished soon, but now it's just lying on my hard drive 80% complete. If we get support for user-maps on mogs or crackaz then i might pick it up again & finish it.

I seem to just keep creating new secret passageways & features, but not actually finishing the parts of the map that mean I could release it. :|

It's about the same visual quality as Kings of the Desert, but is very non-linear.

Please keep in mind that District (docks, as Kiech says), Bafford and Ancient Ruins aren't player-made. They are dev maps.

For the rest... hmm, Archery by NeoPendragon and Payback by DarkProject. Download them.

Thieves' Den is a waste of time, IMO.

            For the record:

I CAN NOT PLAY PAYBACK OR SWORD-ARENA. THE GFX LAG RENDERS THEM UNPLAYABLE ON MY MACHINE.

            Damn you ToB!

            As for the others:
Th-20 just got on my nerves, because I was hopelessly lost. It really needs a map.

I told prototyp3 a while ago, that if he wanted, I'd finish Thieves Den off, for him. He agreed, but I've been too busy/lazy to do anything to it.

The rest are are pretty good in my opinion.

Server downloads are supposed to be enabled in 1.3. As of that time, I think we're planning on adding TH-Archery and TH-Breandor once it's out of testing (I've seen Breandor, and it's fantastic).

If mutator support is also present in 1.3 (or if we can find a way around it) we may also have an end-round mapvote in place, allowing players to vote for the next map played.

I haven't played all maps yet, but I'll tell you this:

Neo's Archery is a sweet map, just the kind of maps I like. Details, atmosphere, etc.
Nachimir's upcoming map is even better, it r0x! Thank god I'm a beta-tester!

Dan, from what I saw of your screenies I'd say you were underestimating yourself; the "visual quality" of your map (if I understand your meaning correctly) is very impressive! (this is coming from someone who is a sucker for eye candy.) The comparison for me just doesn't hold...

Alright just played a little bit of Payback by DarkProject.

VERY pretty all around, first off.

LAG LAG LAG. Everywhere outside. UGH. The inside looked good though. Well thought-out. The money-value annoyed me though. I hate picking up an item that is only 5 or 10 loot. And I needed to collect at least 5000 worth of it, plus a gem! I felt that I forgot to bring my U-haul truck, all of the stuff I was carrying. A lot of fun shadows to play in. It was probably the fact that my computer needed to reboot, but finding the entrances was difficult, and there is a door that looks like its real, but its not frobbable.

And whatever you do, don't jump down the dry well in the city streets.

                              Aw shucks ops:

Well, the main thing is that my map isn't dead, it's just taking longer than expected.

I keep looking at various bits of my map & thinking "this looks too boring". Perhaps, I'll release it soon & then maker it more pretty in the next version.
