  • Sword blocking = invincible to swords?

Last night, while guarding the Korman, Grank and his teamate decided on a pretty good strategy. Grank would distract the heck outta me while the other thief looted out the church. So Grank gave up all his pots/whatever to the other thief, and came after me with a sword. I have no issues with that, its a good strategy.

Anyways, my beef is with this. Grank was blocking. Which is OK too, but I kept getting the 'sqish' sound as if I was hitting him, yet, no blood was spilling. Only after about 50 whacks or so did I start getting the 'blocked' noise, and I never got a 'blocking' animation. I understand that in 1.3 overhead swings won't be blockable, but why did I get the noise that said I hit him, when in reality I wasn't? It would have made a big difference to me.

And it appears that ALL attacks from the front are blockable, not just some. I tried hitting him while crouched, while leaning, moving side to side...no hits at all.

If you are interested in the story, Grank ended up dead because I called for backup, but his buddy had already looted what he needed. I found his buddy hanging out by an exit, and was about to tag him...then my computer started crashing. So I don't know the rest. Oh well.

Bolts are difficult to block, and firebolts... well, I'll leave it to your imagination. Hit a blocker with a parabolt, and you'll find it easy to get behind him, where he CAN'T block. I have no idea why you were getting the hit noise when you should have been getting the block noise, though.

Ugh... yes, bolts and arrows are way to hard to block... I'd like to see that changed, then the block function would be used by a lot more people, including guards.

Also, if the overhead swings will be unblockable, I'd like to have an indicator that a guard is charging his her weapon... maybe make the 'huff' sound audible for both thieves and guards (which would simulatiniously nerf the thieves 'overpowered' AI sneak attack).

Too bad we don't have animations. That would be even better. We don't really need another audible sound.

Animations are probably a nono because the actual animation doesn't come from the sword, but the guard model... seeing as the original model was shamelessly ripped (ssh! ) from UT itself, which only has guns and no slashing weapons, there's no slashing animation for the model...

Think of this, it would be really crappy to just have sword wobbling sideways without the models arms moving eh? Not all is in the wrists.

And anyway, when you get a little familiar with different guards and their tactics, you will always notice that many guards back off before charging their weapon, or else you'll just hear them stop slashing you... by the time they do that, I'll have ran to them and slashed them like 3 times allready... offcourse this depends on the skill of the guards, but I don't think making the charged move unblockable will mean defeat for the swordthief, it'll just need adjusting a bit.

Yea it would look silly if the arms didn't move. But its still too bad that we don't have them.

I'm going to hate myself for this:

You have to circle strafe with the sword if they block.

LOL! Ok, but I stink at circle strifing right now. I will have to practice that more. Last night I pushed myself into a corner, to avoid the BJ instead. Damn bastard of shadows...

Circle strafing is way overrated, any decent guard/thief knows how to counter it.

I don't know. I have seen Agga fearlessly face guards with his BJ. I have even seen a few guards run from him. Of course, I don't remember who he DM'ed. But it was pretty cool to watch.

It's a lag issue, people with high lag get clubbed to death by the BJ because they can't keep up with the movement. The trick is to never stop facing the thief and to just whack them as they get close...

I find thieves trying to circlestrafe me a very easy kill, they'll try to pull the dance of doom on me, but when they find out it doesn't work they'll try to run... most foolish thing ever.

KB you have it wrong. StarWhores used the sword to draw you guards off and I looted. It worked wonderfully.

Oh, I have it backwards. I saw you both running into the church at the same time. I just saw your damn name and I guess it stuck. LOL.

Are you kidding? How many people do you know that can block arrows and bolts flying at them?! From what I can tell from the Accents, this isn't 16th century japan, and we are not crazy jackie chan ninjas! We are thieves and guards... trained in thieving and guarding! not blocking arrows whizzing at our head at about 30 miles per hour with a thin piece of metal! This isn't Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: The Game. so no...we do not need to change that.

But blocking range needs to opened up. If you don't find the tiny little sweet spot for blocking, then you end up getting hit when it clearly looks like you blocked it.

Blocking arrows and bolts gets easier with practice. You just have to be good at judging arcs, and doing so quickly. Works better the more time you have to react, obviously.

And as for swordthieves, as Virus will attest, I have a counter. And I'm not sharing. ^_^
