  • Graphics Card problem with TUT and UT in general

I used to use a Riva TNT 32 meg card, and I could Alt-Tab out of UT.

Since then, I've gotten a Geforce 4 MX 400 (I think), and since then I haven't been able to Alt-Tab.

Thats not totally true though. After I put the card in, I could alt-tab, but it took 30 seconds going out, and back in.* With the TNT card, it took a couple seconds, if that.
That didn't last long, and NOW when I alt-tab it takes 30 seconds, and when I finally do get out, errors occur and the game crashes anyway.

    I got the card 4 months ago...maybe 5.

Anyway, it would REALLY be great if I could alt-tab without the game crashing, or taking 30 seconds. Anyone know a fix?

I've reinstalled both game and card, updated drivers, etc...

I also think it might have to do with the color bits (32 bit, 16 bit, etc...) but not sure.

    Thanks.

*this is the time it takes to load UT initially, if that matters.

The difference is that you're probably using D3D rendering now, and you can't alt-tab out in D3D. Try switching to OpenGL. You should be able to then.

If that part works, but you find that performance suffers, or that everything is too dark, try looking for some other OpenGL renderers. I've played with several, and they range from sleek and smooth performance, with an incredible look to "What the hell is this, I'm playing in a strobelight?" (about 10 fps - bleah).

Sisu has a good point, that can cause problems. But D3D is notorious for exactly the problem you described.

I totally forgot about the Tech forum until I couldn't find my post and tried to think of what could have happened to it

D3D is garbage compared to OpenGL.

OK, now, I have another problem. At a distance, things have what I would call "waves" in them. Textures bleed through. When I stand on the bridge leading to book from master house (DE), and look down where tiles are.....its got green on it diagonally(like the grass). On other maps, there are bands of backtextures that bleed through stuff. This sometimes throws me off on whether I saw a thief or just the OpenGL.

Could you recommend some OpenGL drives, or a site where I can get them?

I know of that one. It's safe. Some people report excellent performance with it, by it sucks ass for me.

Why not good? Did you try it?

Otherwise, I can send you another one I have, the one I use.

I am pleased with the last official OpenGL driver that Epic released for UT. Get it here.

I'm using D3D and I can alt-tab in 3 seconds or so (well actually, I use the 'show log' thingy as alt-tab doesn't make UT stay minimized). But then again, I got a Radeon 64 meg card.
