  • Attn: Thief .mis to Thievery .t3d converter script

    Um hi.

This perl file will convert the architecture from a Thief I / II (and possibly System Shock II) .mis mission file to UnrealEd .t3d format.

It was written by DromEd expert Datoyminytah from the TTLG forums a while back, but he never got round to finishing it.

It needs work, specifically, I couldn't run it because I had a CowGEN mismatch or something and its all complicated and I'm a thick paddy. Would like it if some perl expert could turn this into a nice clean program.

Oh yeah. You need ActivePerl and CowGEN to run it.
Don't ask me about any technicalities - I'm stupid.

    Enjoy. Hah.

I'll take a look at it. Hmm, no "use strict" in the code. This is going to be fun. *looks around for his Thief CD's, a mallet, and some duct tape*

Sorry to get your hopes up DP.

Hopefully that nice Oie chap will turn that script into a program.

It has worked before though, did a perfect conversion of the Thief I training mission.

There's no problem as long as no one is trying to sell it.

well, I can only think of being charged for "diminishing the market" since youre giving away a near copy of the level for free, seriously doubt that would happen though, seems like the thief team is pretty in touch with their fan base and would regard it as fan art

not to mention all the loop holes you make if you actually edit the level some, Id say youre pretty safe

That and Warren Spector has stated that remakes are okay.

there's nothing wrong with fans making maps from the original thief series. The official Thievery mod will still not be usng any offical Thief levels of copyrighted things of that kind (the first person who goes "OMG BUT YOU LEFT THIS ONE IN!" on some random texture that didn't get replaced of all those that were gets banned).

Blah blah blah blah same old same old.

HOWEVER, i want to make this very clear: STOP STOP STOP STOP going "WARREN SPECTOR SAID HE DIDN'T MIND SO THAT MAKES IT OK GUYS!!!!!" Warren Spector may be the team leader for Thief 3, Warren Spector may have the rights to use Thief content, but warren spector DOES NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THIS CONTENT. Eidos owns the rights to ALL Thief content. No one on the dev team or in the community has gotten permission in writing from Eidos Executives or lawyers. Thus, it's not "OK". Period.

Doesn't matter. You have to get permission to use it. It just so happens that it's easier for one Eidos game to get permission for use of other Eidos material than it is for, say, a Sierra game to get permission to use Eidos material.

And yes, there are many ways in which Thievery could have been claimed to make money as grounds for legal action. We've been mentioned on websites, had blurbs in magazines and demoed on TV, after all.
