  • How do you plublisch your map

I'm wondering what's your favourite way to plublisch your map.

What, no option for distributing a straight .unr file?

I've never gotten hte Umod maker to work right. Any ideas why?

          maybe there was a problem?

Either that or you're not doing something right.

Zipped Umod would definately be tidiest if more than one file has to be distributed, but seems a bit unnecessary for a single unr file. I would just zip it, because I don't know how many people have WinRAR

I would prefer the map compressed as .rar. For those who don't have it put a link to http://www.rarlabs.com/ by the download link.

winrar can unzip rar and zip files but winzip cannot unzip rar files so it's safest to go with zip...or if you have handy webspace or a nice host then you can publish it in both rar and zip (kindda how i did with my map )

Before I vote in the poll, I have to ask for clarification: Is the purpose of the poll to get advice, or to get individual preferences?

I prefer to plusbplicsh in RAAAAAR.
                    The only constant is change.
(And I wouldn't have it any other way.)

In that case, I won't vote, but will simply explain. My answers for the two instances are different.

My personal preference is to receive a published map in .rar format. I prefer the utility and its increased versatility, and compression is better.

However WinZIP is by far the most commonly used compression utility and it doesn't handle any format other than .zip. so my advice would be to publish in that format.

I'm using an installer to publisch my maps and my project.
My installer (and my update system) will search my ftp-server for the rar packages, unpack it and install it to a directory that has been established by the user.

It is also a better service.
Because there are (first time) users that don't know how to install my project.
So my installer will install (or maybe update) it for them.
And a .zip package cannot do that (maybe zip-executables).

                              NO!

                              Installer=bad

Even more so if the installer needs to download the files from the internet.

If you need everything to go in specific folders then pack the archive that way and/or give instructions in a .txt file.

However, if you insist on having an installer version then please have the files available in an archive format(preferably rar).

Archive executables(zip, rar, ace) can all do that, you just need to have the directories packed with the archive. If you must have an installer this would be the best choice as they can be opened with compression programs(I like to know what I'm putting on my computer).
