  • I'm afraid of the dark

    Why do some mappers leave their maps completely dark if no light exists? I understand there are going to be certain areas where it is important to have such an area, but when EVERY area is in complete darkness, it gets rather annoying and difficult to play. Note that I am not talking about areas where a thief will be 100% invisible, but rather areas that have 0 visibility without a light source.

      I notice it a lot on Grange, a little bit on spiders(but that could be a map design), the player map th-district, others that I am probably not considering right now. Mind you it is not always an issue, but does/can raise problems for playability.

        He likely talked about Folly or Grange , Ulukai's maps which have 0 zonelighting at some places. Sure it's hard to see in the dark , but it can help thieves greatly. They can run in the dark without fear , and engage shadowslashers in a swordfight even if they're not supposed to be invisible.

          And guards can hide in the dark to!
          But hey... If there is no light it normally is pitch black you know
          Anyways, there should normally be a 3-4 in ambience lightning for every zone

            Never really noticed that anywhere on Grange. And only one place on Spiders, but it's supposed to be like that there, I suspect.

              All over in Grange. The stairs leading to the kitchen, the old cell areas, the areas that have the criss-cross shadowlines.

              Skeletonhead has this also in a few stairwells and the chapel, but that may be purposeful.

              Its just that-in general, completely dark areas aren't a great idea IMHO. Sometimes it can be OK, such as the exit in Folly, and sometimes it looks like the map is unfinished, like in th-district.

                    Amient lighting doesn't affect thieve's visibility, but it does affect the visibility of everything else (mines included ) I'm pretty sure that none of the levels have no ambient lighting though.
                    It's not my fault everything you like is terrible.

                      Its not the entire map in general, but that could be an issue in the future. Its here, and there, and places that could make gameplay a chore. Depends on the map. Just don't be too liberal with the zero-light ambiance.

                        I think ZL is good. Right now I explore the new maps in SP Thiefmatch.

                        Need the Flare Arrows With ZL, I can explore in MP TvsG if I want to.
